Hi All. This is my first post. I am researching the roof cleaning business, and I was hoping you guys could answer a few questions for me as well as offer me some advice and encouragement.
Rather than bug everyone with a bunch of green questions right now, I’d first like to tell you my plan, my understanding of the basic concept of cleaning a roof and get some feedback from all you pros out there.
I live in an area that has just started to see a lot of dirty roofs over the last 10 to 15 years. There are little to no service providers here in my area. I am planning to start up in the spring of 2010, and operate as a part-time business.
My marketing plan will include a web-site, mail adverts, and word of mouth through friends and acquaintances to start. I have about 5 friends that are willing to let me clean their roofs first before I just jump in doing a paying job.
I have a few tools, but plan on purchasing more of what I need in the coming months. I know most of you guys probably use mounted pressure washers with tanks and higher end equipment, but take a look at my thoughts here and just let me know if this will work or not. Keep in mind that I want to keep my budget as small as possible, but I also want to make sure I have the basic tools and equipment to provide service as thoroughly and as safely as possible.
To apply the cleaner I plan on using a hose-end sprayer and applying it from the roof-edge. I figure I’ll need, at minimum, an electric pump to move detergent as far as possible for the average home. As for the cleaner to use, I’ve seen several on the web, but I’m not too sure of what’s best. I have a small potable pressure washer, (Honda 5.5 hp). I plan to use this with a telescopic wand and possibly a (pitch-witch) device to apply low pressure and rinse the roof off.
I have a ton of other questions related to specific topics, but for now, if I could just hear from some of you on whatever you’d like to add, advice or other knowledge that would be helpful and encouraging, that would most welcomed. I’m just trying to get a basic feel for this business and what to expect. Think of me as someone you know telling you they want to get into this business. What would you say?
Well there is plenty of info on the forum here and it is very valuable and there is a search bar at the top. If you are talking about using a pitch witch and pressure to clean roofs than this would not be the board for you. Your veterans on this board to not use pressure to clean any roofs that I know of but I could be wrong. Any kind of pressure used can cause granite lose and could lead to some bad things happening on your part. Look up the technical bullentins about ARMA/GAF roofing about no pressure washers. Use the search on the top and you will have a lot of reading to do and it will help you out, good luck.
Thanks Pat. Bare with me while I get acquainted with this site. I added a little more to my info file. My bio is brief, but if there is anything I can add please let me know.
Hey Dan, Welcome aboard. First, add your location to the bio. We all will want to know if you are close to any of us.
Second, everything you need to know is here! As was stated use the Search feature and read read read! The info is free but you are expected to work for it.
We will all help you out as much as possible. This is a brotherhood so treat every one here with respect and honesty and you will prosper.
This is a non-pressure washing technique using a blend of chemicals you mix yourself. DO NOT BUY ANY PREMIXED SOLUTIONS. They will not work as well as the "Apple Sauce" mix that is described here.
No one here will ask you for money unless you want to freely donate in the future.
On the Home page are some articles to get you started. ("All new members must read this" etc.)
Hi Dan...welcome to the site!! The seach engine should become your best friend. There is tons of info in the site. It after searching you still cant find what your looking for, wede be happy to answer your questions. Like the others said though. High pressure= the wrong way to clean a roof. Low pressure is key.
Since you are not planning on starting until 2010 I would suggest starting at the beginning of each subforum and read every topic. When your done reading and still have questions then use the search. Most all of us on here have read every topic and most of us have read them all more than once. Then if you have more questions then ask but get yourself familiar with everything about roof cleaning that you can find here.
