Why would you really even need to know the pitch? If it is steep its steep. Just some pointers for you guys, if you don't think it wil hold the sauce, then it is steep and up your thickening agent. NO real reson to get a pitch finder out.

If your bidding by the sq ft, dont you think you need to know the pitch?
I have gotten to where I can bid a roof with out measure it, I pretty much go by how many gallons it will take...
Absolutely you need to know the sf. But for the new guys they really don't need to know the pitch. After a few measurements you should get the hang of measuring a roof. When a roofer goes out to measure a roof he usually will take a look at the roof and calculate the amount of squares( or 10x10 sections) and do this by knowing exactly what a 10x10 section looks like. Any good roofer can come within a square of the roof
But just like you said we ususally can get an exact on how many gallons and man hours we need which is fine and dandy for us.
I use a rolling tape measure thing and usually count shingles or pieces of siding and never get on a roof if I have to measure.
Ofcourse there are a ton of houses I do that are the same exact style so I'm used to them
