I got a threatening phone call from the "Post Master" in my area. He informed me that it is NOT legal to put anything ON the mailbox either.
He told me that the entire mailbox is property of the Federal Government and NOBODY but the homeowner and the postman can touch the box for any reason what-so-ever.
I tried to play dumb but, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that the mailbox is NOT meant for our use.
A buddy of mine got a fine for littering because a couple of his cards blew off of the mailboxes. He didn't get in trouble for using the boxes though. Go figure. I do know a lady that got a written warning from the post office for using the outside of the boxes. Another friend got a giant wad of his own brochures stuffed in his mailbox with a note from a postman saying that he will be fined or jailed (I forget exactly what it said) if he touches another mailbox.
The bottom line is that it is a Federal crime to use the mailbox in any way. I'm not sure what penalties go along with it. I'm just sharing what I (think) to be true. If you want the phone # of the Post Master that yelled at me..... ..... He's a jerk as far as I'm conserned.

Don, You are absolutely right !! I talked to the postmaster a while back. He said; It is illegal to put anything in or on a mailbox without the proper postmark ! A $300 fine could be accessed for each violation !! He did say if it is a mailbox with the cubby hole below the mailbox you can use that.
My mom used to sell Avon back in the day and they did the plastic bags on the mailbox with the brochure in them and she never heard a thing about it...so I was just going on that as a basis for the idea.
But I'm definitely going to play it safe if it's an issue at all. Getting your information out there isn't worth the fines or possible jail time. Thanks guys!
