Here's a few tips that will make a huge difference in the quality of your before and after photographs.
1) Camera angle
Use a tripod or mark the spot where you are going to take before and afters so you will have the exact same camera angle and cropping. Zoom in close enough so the left and right edge of the roof is tight in the frame, minimizing the amount empty foreground and background space, to make the roof stand out more. Use a step ladder to get up higher to give you a better angle or get on the roof and shoot a few shots up top also. Stay back far enough if there is no obstructions in front of your lens to avoid using too wide of a focal length on your lens. To reduce the appearance of a distorted image, you need to back up and zoom in so you are using a normal focal length or more of a telephoto zoomed in lens.
2) Lighting
Roofs with a lot of shade or tree cover with funky shadows casting on the roof don't look as good. Ideally the most dramatic before and after images are taken when it's overcast for the before pictures (dark and hideous) and bright and sunny (high noon) for the after pictures. Let it rain a few times to rinse off all the mold good to give you the cleanest possible shots prior to taking the after pictures. The time of year is also crucial. Spring or summer make for the best after pictures because the sun is higher in the sky to shine more light on the roof, especially the north side. Usually the north side of the roof is going to give you the most dramatic photographs which means if the sun is out (not cloudy) it will be in front of the camera, so shading your lens to keep the sun off the lens will prevent camera flare, and give you a better shot.
3) Exposure
When shooting the before picture if it is sunny and well lit, reduce the brightness and increase the contrast a little on the before pictures on photo shop, so you can see the streaks better. Sharpening also helps enable you to see the streaks better. If your before pictures are taken on a cloudy day, crank up the contrast more to enhance the streaks better. Enhancing your images is a fine art. You want to avoid making too much adjustments to avoid the images looking fake or digital altered. Tweaking them just a little so they look better and more professional is the key.
When printing photographs for your portfolio, bigger is better.
When showing customers your work, you want to use at least 8x10's
11x14's are even better to show lots of detail. I get calls all over the country from guys asking me if they can use my photographs for their websites and advertising. I have to turn them down because I am a former photographer and my photographs are copyrighted. There is a great deal more to taking pictures than just buying a camera, pointing it at something and pressing a button.
Using these tips will help you take your own photographs better and you will also be able to speak about them with the same confidence as I do with mine, because you are the one who actually cleaned the roof and recorded the results.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't taken any before and after pics yet, but I hope to be taking my first in a couple of weeks. I'll use your tips and post what I take along with my soon to be rig setup.
I just thought I would bring this to the top of the recent posts again. Mike Sullivan offered some great tips in here for new guys taking pictures of their jobs. Mike, you should add some tags to this post because it is very difficult to find if you search for it.
Following some of his advice can really make the difference between you looking like a professional company and looking like a fly by night.
Professionalism is everything in this tough economy. You are selling yourself and your business' image as much as you are selling the roof cleaning service.

I just posted the comments below under a different subject. Thought I'd put it here too in case anyone missed it.
I take ALOT of pictures before and after cleaning just to make sure I get a couple of good ones. I'm a little picky about stuff like that though. I don't have a suggestion for a camera but I do have a tip. I download the "before" pics to my PC and throw the best 5-10 onto one sheet (I have to shrink them a little). I print that out and bring it with me when taking the "after" pics. That way I know I have the same distance and angle for both. Hope that makes sense.
Trust me guys. This is a very important topic. You may not think so, but great pictures really make a huge difference in the customer's perception of your professionalism. I have customers compliment me all the time on my before and after pictures. They always ask how I manage to get them so perfect. I don't have the heart to tell them how many pictures I have messed up and don't post. Mike takes great pictures. Take his advice. There is nothing more dramatic than before and after pictures that look like they are the exact same roof with new shingles.

Thanks Brian, well said. Image is everything.
You definitely want your customers to perceive you as a true pro.
Your website, photographs, videos, rig, vehicle graphics, business cards, flyers, ads, uniforms are all part of it.

Having perfect before and after pictures will make you more money than anything else when it comes to your website. The first thing people should see is a set of photos. The house on our home page was for sale and the realtor paid to have the picture taken by an ariel photographer. Then they decided to have the roof cleaned and we paid him for that photo and the after shot they took for the listing. Got us a perfect before and after from the air. We use it for just about everything.

Seriously, it will. This is so true. I just bought a new camera with awesome light exposure capabilities so we can take the morning pics. My old camera was horrid now that I look at the old pics.

Bump! This is good advice for taking pics of roof cleaning! I seen a video that was on a tripod. It took a pic every min. or so, of the house wash. Very impressive.

And a beautiful pic it is!
My experience with before and afters is this, you never know how they are gonna come out. Some of my best pics are almost afterthoughts that came out stunning, and my best planned ones sometimes look not so good.
I can say this, NEVER have ALL super impressive expensive homes on your website!!!!
Never forget about the elderly Widows little house, and some average homes. The Elderly often pay Cash, and many will even feed you, for bringing happiness in their lives.
I cleaned this roof in North Tampa, and when I was done, the old woman came out to see her roof. She started crying, and so did I. She missed her deceased husband, and the new looking roof reminded her of how they saved money for it, and how proud he was of his new roof. He died 2 days later. I cried my eyes out with her, and hugged her the same way I hugged my own Mom, when my Grandpa died.
My roof cleaning work brought happiness to the old woman, money can't buy that.

shoot Chris T, that's moving, If you can cry, I guess I can cry, the last time I remember crying is when my hottest girl friend cut me off and said she just wanted to be friends,
Chris,That is so true..If you show nothing but monstr homes the little guy will think you are too expensive.Little roofs and they may think you are not capable of handling the big jobs. In regards to the elderly lady, those are the best. When I was doing "Paint Your Heart Out Tampa" we had a Japanese lady who's husband was a pilot in the war and they had met & married then. He had passed about 10 years earlier and she had all these great pictures of him on her living room wall in his uniform. She kept calling us her little angels. She made us a fantastic home made lunch & cookies. & she was crying when we made her home sparkle like new again. That's the best Man!!
