I am a veteran and I have great respect for all that are serving and that have served, especially in war time. Having said that, I would agree that you would probably get hit up for the discount in military towns. I don't live in a military town so I haven't been asked about that, but if I where I would probably offer a discount, but it would be something small like 5-10% off. You don't necessarily need to promote the fact that you are willing to give that discount, but if asked you can offer it.
To me the bottom line is profit and providing for my family, so if offering the discount is going to hurt my profits too much then I wouldn't offer it.

Dustin
Well said Dustin!
Ask anybody I BLEED PATRIOTISM and wear my colors on my sleeve, hence my company name.
However, I also agree that offering a GI discount, is a personal business preference but the bottom LINE is still THE BOTTOM LINE.
If your doing anything that drives you into the red then you need to stop it and get back, in the black.
Revenue is what feeds families, not giveaways, no matter how well meaning or well deserved.
Thanks to both of you. I did not serve as it just was not for me but on my dad's side of the family I am a first generation AMERICAN and proud of it. Mom was adopted so we don't know.
Military history fascinates me and I read all I get my hands on.
I am not ashamed but rather angry at what happened to our returning troops in the 60's and 70's. Wish I was old enough back then to break some 2x4's over some knot heads. If I have any control at all this will not happen when I am around.
We had a local TN soldier killed and we found out that the nut preacher from KS was going to protest at the funeral in a nearby town. Well I would have to estimate but there were around 500 people surrounding the cemetary to keep these folks out. A lot of citizens like my self and an entire bike club. Every single member showed up on their bikes. Needless to say the family had a nice quiet service. Everyone saluted the convoy on the way in and again when they left.
We do/did things here to support our troops in many ways. One thing was the collection of toiletries and other items that were then shipped to the troops overseas. The other thing was they had a drive here for baby items (formula, diapers, clothes etc.) for the wives left behind with newborns on the way or already here. Nothing worse for a soldier when in battle than to have to worry about the family he left behind.
We also support http://www.komando.com/operationkomando/ Operation Komando and treatsfortroops.com I have also sent several care packages to both of my son inlaws while they are deployed with more than they can eat themselves. They take this and distribute to their unit. I send things like 2 10 lb bags of jolly ranchers(chocolate melts) peanut butter and cheese crackers, beef jerky, peperoni etc. things that will not spoil and be kept without a refer. Pick it all up as Sam's or Costco and use the USPO stuff it and send it boxes.
Since I live in a military town I just decided to drop the price and leave it at that for everyone.
Heres my two cents on this Pat, I was in Vietnam 67-68 and yes alot of protesters not that they were all wrong , Vietnam was a dragged out BS thing too many died , i even took my cousion home on a escort duty he was killed as a door gunner on a chopper, and then we ran out of there with our heads up our ass,s when Nixon was president, well this has nothing to do with discounts for military, If i feel people are short on money i do my best on the price no matter who they are , Would you give a "general" a discount or a family in need, and that includes us if we need the money for our family, who gives us a discount.
I usually give discounts to poor people who can't afford most things they need, weather they be military or not. I live near 5 bases and have never once been asked for a military discount. Don't forget that with public servents, poloticians and military that your taxes are paying their salaries. I have a high respect especially for veterans and active duty, my prices are actually negotiable with any customer that wants to barter.
Wow ,what has happened to us? What has happened to this country? The bottom line? The bottom line is that I have never served, But I have enjoyed the benefits of those who have! When I hear some one has served I do what I can.......I clean the gutters......I take money off. What does it cost me but a lttle time and a little cleaner. Christ stop thinking of yourself! If you served or have a family member serving I will take good care of you and I mean GOOD CARE! We have become a nation of spoiled BRATS! You ever sit down and listen to what these people have gone through? I met an old man yesterday who's wife had just passed and was selling his home. I gave him a rock bottom price of 360 for his front roof......he said he could'nt afford it. I sat in his front yard and talked with him,he served his whole life. I told him I would do the job and when he sold his house he could mail me a check. I mean come on......what will it cost me fifty bucks?
Tony welcome to RCIA , just because someone served does not mean they don't have money and the same goes for senior citizen's, I'm both and do i get a discount from my vendors NO, people in a military town do this because its a sales thing and thats thier bread and butter! when you give an estimate and theres 2 BMW's and HUMMERS etc in the driveway of a 800,000 plus house and the they ask for a military discount would you give one ?? As Bill Booze and myself said if you feel the people can't afford it then give a break no matter who they are , there the ones that really appreciate it.
All I can say to that is what ashame. That's one of the reasons this country is shot, no one gives a damn about anything but themselves. I am not saying you Vinny, The guys got those cars in the driveway thats different. But that ain't the VETS I have been bumping into. The vets I bump into are working stiffs, just getting y. I dont want to get into it but these poor guys that get ****ed up physically or mentally get Chit! You tell me you are a vet or your son or daughters in the armed forces...I'll take care of you.....bottom line!
I can tell you're very passionate about people that have served our country. I agree, they have sacrificed a lot to service our country and have paved our way of life in America. No one is arguing that fact. I haven't ran into anyone on this forum that isn't thankful for the freedoms that we have and those freedoms came at a cost. I would guess that most of the guys on this forum are hard working, red blooded Americans like you and I who are trying to provide for their families. Having said that, guys like Pat that live in military towns would have a hard time making a living if every time he turned around he had to discount his services.
I have served. I would offer a discount to a veteran if asked, but that is everyone's personal choice. If it's deciding between giving a discount or paying my mortgage payment or putting food in my children's mouths the discount is going to loose.
It's not a matter of not giving a darn about anyone else, everyone's circumstances are different. Additionally, there are other ways of taking care of someone than lowering your price.
I have to agree with Big Tony,Dustin. he didn't just say lowering the price he has also stated doing things for free like gutter cleaning. " Having said that " I am sure that no one on here is not paying their mortgage giving 20,30 or 50 dollars off a job. If you are then your pricing is all wrong. Also word gets out you help any " group " it cant hurt.As my friend Vinny says......just my two cents.......
Wow.....becareful there shark boy! I would never say any War is easier then another. War is HEll yesterday or today. Look its a vetran or a seinor....cut them a break....it don't hurt you. Makes them feel better and you look like a good guy.Don't blame November with whats wrong with this country....it's VALUES! Values that have gone out the window!Values like going to church.....holding the door for a lady.......giving a Chit about old people and VETRANS!
'Too many sit on their back sides in November instead of getting out and excercising their right to vote and just follow like the well trained heeled and neutered dog.'
Hit the nail on the head there Pat.
