Not sure if it really matters how old your ladder is?? just so it's in good condition.
I personally take very good care of my ladders, I don't abuse them, and I explain to any one helping me to take care of them too. If they are droped I want to know about it.
I also would prefer not to lend my ladders out, because I don't know how they were taken care of. My safety is first, I have to climb on them.
How to inspect a ladder? I suppose you would simply do a visual, and physical check, and always ask to be notified if they were dropped, or abused.
For roof cleaning in Evansville, IN our ladder arsenal is a bit different from some, and very similar to others. We use a 24' aluminum extension, and an 8' aluminum step ladder. I have yet to meet a roof that these ladders haven't been sufficient to reach when combined with a high flow roof cleaning pump. Once this year, we had to rent a 40' ladder, and it was a beast.
Every time Me and my helper pull off the 40.... We try to find any other way with the 24. Any way when we pull the 40 off we look for a place where there are no windows set it up get the right height and top and bottom it till the ladder is where it needs to be. We are in NO hurry messin with the 40 either.
I keep a 28', 24', and a 10' step ladder on the truck. These are what I use the most. But I have about every other size made back at the shop.(40', 32', another 24', 20', 12', and a 8', 2- 6', 3- 4', 2' step ladders) Its amazing what you gather over the years.
