OK - the best respirators for roof cleaning use what is called an acid/gas or Organic Vapor Cartridge. This deals with both the fumes and airborn particles of the roof cleaning chemical.
IF you have ever worked thr ground while a roof is being cleaned you will see that the PARTICLES are the biggest problem ! You can SEE the particles go airborne when the spray hits the roof. These particles are breathed In !
While it is BEST to always wear the correct respirator - we have found that a simple disposable cotton/polyester "dust mask" is better then NOTHING.
Sometimes you actually have to change them on big roofs - but so what ? They are dosposable/cheap and TRAP the particles before you breath them in.
I agree. A respirator would be best. But, please wear something... I worked for a chem. manufacturer, and we had to wear respirators when we were around the chems. I have seen firsat hand how bad unseen chems can be. I have seen a few people die because of exporsure to chems, chem gas. This is not something to mess with. Aren't we all working so we can ENJOY LIFE........
I bought mine and a set of replacement cartridges at Home Depot.
Part number for the respirator is 95050 Part number for the filters is 95061
Here is what it says on the cartridge packaging. NIOSH Approved as an 8053-P100 cartridge for organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen flouride, sulfur dioxide, chlorine dioxide and solid and liquid particulates that may contain oil. (99.7% efficiency Level)
Been using a vapor cartridge style resporater in 1986 when I begain restoring cedar shake roofs and siding and sealing with CWF (pre VOC compliant days)
I bought the AO Safety respirator recently and it works great. Only problem is I can't put on safety glasses because the nose/mouth piece on the respirator is so big. I bought a safety mask today and it will work fine but I'm starting to feel like Darth Vader. What are you experience roof cleaners doing (different safety glasses, masks, nothing)? Thanks!
This is the one I been using and it has OSHA Approval. I have 30 hours OSHA and I follow what they say, and this mask works just fine.
5103/5203/5303 Organic Vapor/Acid Gas Certain organic vapors, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide or hydrogen fluoride.
Im using the same vapor mask Andre uses. Seems to work well although its probably time to change the filters. The last job or two I could smell the vapors a little.
