After reading what Chris from Apple wrote about breathing in the fumes over the years, We will all wear mask this year.

Wearing a mask is a good idea but we don't.� It is usually too humid & hot here.� Fortunately there is usually a good breeze.

I have the respirator and the correct chlorine filters but have not used them yet. After reading this post, I will start using.

The mask stinks here with the humidity. Sweat pours out by the time i take it off but i guess when you can see the fumes rising off the roof stuffy hot air is better than toxic air. I bought mine at the local ace hardware. Need to check it tommorrow and make sure it rated for this stuff.

My brother in law works at the Pine Bluff Arsenal and they deal with REAL ****. Hes on the maintenance crew. They have to wear resperators and full body suites.
I guess SH beats anthrax lol

I got mine at HD under $40 and also bought a spare set of cartridges. One thing to consider is to keep the package sealed until it is needed. No sense in using up some of the filtering ability.

maybe some of the other can answer this better but I don't think the fumes will reach the person on the ground.

How long do you really have to wear it? Maybe an hour. 1/2 hour setup, 1 hour spraying, 1/2 hour cleanup. Unless you are mixing the chemicals then I would say 1 hour per roof should do unless it is a large roof.

My wife was looking over my shoulder while I was reading this. She said she can't tell me to wear one, (she wants me to), but my 13 year old son will be wearing one. I believe it seems to be a good idea for all of us.

I've written extensivley on this about my family and their lung related deaths. Now Dave has posted as well about his personal condition. There are others here as well with lung damage from this work. If you refuse to be safe......

The ground person is a little safer, but not completly. One of my ground guys already took some overspray to the face. I say face shields and respirators for everyone. It would also be a great way to add to your pitch...we follow all osha standards??

There has been some concern about the home owner thinking that there maybe a problem with the cleaning agents if they see you wearing a respirator. Let them know you are protecting yourself from the algae , mold or whatever else is growing on their roof. " As I walk on the dry sections of your roof the mold becomes airborn and I don't want to breath that crud into my lungs".

I always wear a respirator. The line of work that I am getting out of, maint. work for a chemical manufacturer, trained us, and made sure we followed the rules. We had 2 people I watched die from there lungs shutting down because of exposure to some unseen, un smelled gas. It is not I repeat is not a good thing to try and save someone's life who's lungs have shut down. The funny thing is, there were other people in the area who were not affected by the gas. So please, were the respirators.

Hello to all. I'm a newbee that just cleaned my first roof 2 days ago. Returning home after finishing the job my wife wanted to know why my voice had changed. My throat was dry and my voice sounded really rough. I didn't wear a respirator. I remember tasting the fumes and saying to myself "this probably isn't good." I WILL BE WEARING A RESPIRATOR ON MY NEXT JOB! I'm waiting for a good rain to rinse the roof so I can get some after pictures to share. Thanks to all for the information on this site. I would not have done the roof correctly if I had not studied this site before attempting a roof cleaning job.

I have been in this business since 1990. In the early years I did not wear one. But today I am paying for it. Luckily, I've only lost my sense of smell. However, I am sure my lungs have been damaged as a result. I STRONGLY recommend the use of any type .

Would you pour SH on your hands and allow it to sit there??? I think most would agree a repirator is a "no brainer" while you still have brain cells...lol!

I would prefer to use one, however, what do you guys say when the customer wonders if you are "poisoning something?" I feel kind of awkward with one on!?!?!?
