Man, I seen the worst thing for our industry today on Home & Garden tv. They showed roof cleaning,....or should I say roof destroying. They showed a guy on a ladder blasting the crap out of the shingles with a pressure washer. The shingles were lifting up all over the place and it just looked like destruction. This is advertising we don't need!!!
I agree, the public does not know that the roof can be cleaned so we need to educate them.
We also need to educate them on how pressure will damage the roof at the same time so they will not get ripped off with the hacks and lowballers out there trying to pull a fast one on them.

Around here, roof cleaning is still relatively new. I would take the tv opportunity to remind people that it can be done, and safely. the tv spot probably sowed a seed, now go harvest it. Cherry-pick that free advertising and use it to re-remind folks that their roof needs a good cleaning!

That's true to a certain degree,...but they portrayed it in such an unproffessional light that a lot of people will think that is how it's done. Sure it showed it can be done, but to the many homeowners out there it may have looked to unconventional, not to mention destructive. And especially to an area where it's relatively new, the people will really need educated away from what they may have seen on HGTV.
Plenty of roofs around here still being pressure washed. Even composition roofs, I simply cant believe it. I have taken more pictures of damaged shingles for the homeowners just to cover my own butt.

Jeff, Can you do me/us a favor, please.
If you can, find out more about that ad or expose' that you saw? Where was the video taken and by who?
If you can do some leg work maybe we can contact the producer of HGTV and explain the HARSH LIGHT that video portrayed out industry in, and the damaging effects that airing that video may have.
We may have an oportunity to re-educate people by having the HGTV crew do a re-shoot with one of successful CETIFIED RCIA Roof Cleaners and re-educate once again on the safer, non-pressure method we promote here on RCIA.
It could be an opportunity to gain substancial exposeure for all of us. I don't always look at things happeningh like this as a STUMBLING BLOCK, rather, it may be a STEPPING STONE, if brought to HGTV's attention and may be a BLESSING in disguise?
Does anyone ELSE take that view or am I being OVERLY optimistic here?
Let us know YOUR thoughts, I personally would appreciate it.
Hi all, this is my first post. I don't think you are being overly optimistic and agree whole heartedly that this is not a stumbling block. Many customers can seem fairly dumb about their projects, yet I seem to run into an equal number of people who do alot of research befor they start a project with a paid service professional. What I mean by that is that at least 50% (In my opinion) of people who saw this broadcast will realize that there is more to be known. As soon as that is realized they will start to search for valid info and find the same mess of contradictory and misinformation most of us on this board have come across all over the web. At that point the job will go to anyone that can explain in detail what is really going on. With that said, yes ths can hurt as anyone with a good sales pitch will be able to get a job powerwashing the roof from a few of the people who saw the broadcast, and some viewers will avoid it based on what they saw, but I feel that an equal number of people who saw it will look for a better way. Plus what homeowner in their right mind is gonna powerwash their own roof?? The people who try that are the ones who will be hurt thew most by this broadcast web they damage their roof or themeselves.

Sorry Dave, but I'm not gonna fool around contacting HGTV. I agree it would be nice for exposure. But the reality of it ever actually happening isn't enough for me to waste my time with.
Guys, I wouldn't worry about one TV show. You are more sensitive about it than the average customer because you are in the business. Most people don't remember much detail about what they are watching. A lot of them will only remember that roof cleaning can be done and will start looking for someone to do the work. When they find you, sell them your services. This is why advertisers will tell you one of the most important steps to take in your advertising is to be repetitive.

Tim Carter is the worst. And the sad thing is, no matter how many people try to explain to him he has no idea what he is talking about or doing, he still thinks he's right.
Don't click on his website, he has received far too many hits than he deserves. I think maybe that's why he's ranked so high for roof cleaning on google. Or like Chris said once, he spends a lot of money to get a high ranking.
