They still sell TSP here as well as the substitute, at lowes and local hardware stores as a painters cleaner. I buy 50lb bags from my chem distributer and save$$. As far as it being illegal I really have not paid much attention too seeing as the retailers still have it. Just like the VOC paints last year, when it's all gone you can't use it anymore. Actually with the VOC paints they only banned the sale in MD not the use soo...
Just call the place were you are buying your SH and they should have it for you.
I know I have the issue with my supplier, some times it works really well and then other times is garbage SH. I called chemsolv today and talked with the guy they get it from. I think they are watering it down on me. I may switch myself to another company next week, its a pain dealing with people that are not very honest about what you get from them.
Great info here guys thanks, It appears most posters here use non-green products, which I assume are more effective and more cost effective (which I am fine on), I want to start cleaning roofs and have been doing my due diligence, can I get some info on what's up with green products such as Roof a Cide or Roof Reviver, does the customer not bring this up? if so how is this origination addressed and handled?
Not trying to question any method just want to "know before I go"--Thanks in advance for any help on this.
The methods we use to contain the solution and keep it on the roof are green, or enviromentally friendly. Also Sodium Hypochorite breaks down into mostly salt after a few hours making it much more "green" then ethenol or Phosphate based products.
One funny thing about the term "green" is that phosphate products actually grow algae in water, potentially blocking UV and oxygen killing the fish.
It is enviromentally harmfull because it helps something green grow!!!!
Tsp is a phosphate many of us use, but you can remove it from the recipe and still have great results.
The point is that many peoples idea of enviromentally friendly are products that make them feel good. That is important when dealing with customers. You can acctually tell them the truth and you are saving water and using enviromentally safe Methods to contain harmfull chemicals!!! All things introduced to an enviroment that were not originally there cause harm to that enviroment in large levels. I have seen many chems claiming to be green or bidegradabel, and guess whats in them....Caustic Soda, Phosphates, Ethenal, Ammonia, Bleach, Acid and all kinds of great things for the enviroment. Go buy something marked green and pour it any into a fish bowl and tell me what happens???
I hope that is a good taste of how some of this works...but my best advice is stay here and active on the board. Use the search up top to read threads on the products you mentioned. Most of what you want to know is already here.
There really isn't anything out there that works like Apple Sauce, Apple Cider or Apple Cider Sauce. The chemicals we use are the only ones recommended by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. Check out the bulletin they put out about it.
Just about every product out there has been tried by someone here. Most of them have been written about quite a bit. Just type the name of the product into the search feature and you will probably have all the info you could want.

I use borax in my love and even when I mix it the night before there is always a residue in my tank. I was wondering if I premixed several containers with 5lbs of Borax in H2o. Then add one to a 40 gal mix. would the borax loose effectiveness ? At the most this mix would only be 5 to 10 days old and only contain the borax and water..

has anyone ever used an product called mold blaster as an additive to extend the roof cleaning? And if you did use it. Did it work. I recently had a sewer backup in my home . the company who came outto clean it up used a product called mold blaster. they told me it would kill the mold and prevent it from returning. I will be placing a call tomorrow to the company that manufactures it to find more info.

Here is a link to the product label. I looked at it a little bit a while back and there were a few things that concerned me.
It claims that it can kill mold and prevent it from coming back for up to 30 days. That doesn't seem like it would be worth adding the extra expense to keep it from coming back for 30 days. We already accomplish that now.
The product label states, "EcoLife products are actually used to clean up chlorine, hydrocarbon and other chemical spills because of their ability to denature these compounds"
That just tells me that this product will eat up the SH faster than most surfactants that you are using. It doesn't sound like a good additive for a roof cleaning mix, but maybe it could be used in a yearly maintenance plan.

I am wanting to start a roof cleaning business in the near future. I need to know what to buy to set up my rig. Also, I have read that bleach is not good for roofs. Have you tried a product called Roof Cleaner QSE? Is this good for cleaning roofs? I would really like to have a product that I can use on any type of roof, siding. brick, etc.
Nice to have you on board Bobby. All the answers you need are here. Like Dave from Roof Clean USA says, grab a legal size pad, write down every question you have and use the search function first. Read all the forum rules and you will find these professionals more likely to help in any way they can once you know the lingo.
Hey guys. TSP is something I havent used in pressurewashing. From the info thrown around I take it that TSP will strentghen my SH. Is this accurate? I bought some today form the paint store just to get familiar with it. Will it act as a detergent when mixed with SH similar to Dawn or what have you? The package has a warning to not get any on glass but doesnt say exactly why. What would happen if you used leftover sauce to wash siding and it comes in contact with windows? Thanx
The leftover Love is a bit strong for washing siding. You can really water it down quite a bit and still have it be effective as a house wash. I have never had any problem with the TSP and glass. Just don't let the cleaner dry on the glass surface. If it does, it can cause an etching effect on the glass.
TSP really helps strengthen your roof cleaning mix. It raises the PH a little and helps make the SH a better cleaner/algae killer. It is also a great detergent. It really helps remove pollutants from the roof. There is a big difference between SH, TSP + water and plain old SH and water.

I added some more detailed instructions for the Apple Cider Sauce.
I have noticed some people wanting to know about the type of surfactant to use and the amount.
1/2 ounce/gallon - 2 ounces/gallon has been proven by most roof cleaners to work the best depending on the pitch of the roof. The more you add the better the cling or stickiness.
Hello all, I just did my first roof yesterday and it rained overnight. I went back to look at it today and noticed about a 2 foot circle of what looks like dishwashing suds coming out of the down spouts. is That normal after a rain? Is that harmful?
