APPLE CIDER SAUCE - 40 gallons/average roof job

15 gallons of bleach - 12.5% sodium hypochlorite
25 gallons of hot water
5 lbs. TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate)
64 ounces of isopropol alcohol
1/2 bottle of Ajax or Dawn

or like Apple says dissolve TSP the night before without hot water because TSP takes a while to dissolve or you can use hot water on the morning of the job.

This mix works great for me.

TSP is the best detergent to mix with bleach and it also thickens the mix slightly to allow you to use less surfactant. TSP also strengthens the bleach better than the surfactant can. TSP also disolves better than Borax.

The alcohol makes the bleach penetrate into the shingles faster enhancing it's mold killing power. Without using alcohol you would need to double the amount of TSP to achieve the same results, which is less pump friendly because it does not dissolve as well.

Using half the amount of TSP you normally would with alcohol makes it more pump friendly because it disolves easier.

64 oz. of alcohol only costs $3.40
5 lbs. of TSP costs $7.50

You are saving money by using them in combination.

It has the best of both worlds. TRY IT!

Back when I started cleaning roofs in Tampa, non pressure roof cleaning was a closely guarded secret.
No one was "talking"
I had to learn on my own over 16 years what worked, and what didn't, as far a roof cleaning products and chemicals go.
Now, I have passed on my roof cleaning knowledge and experience gained by countless days cleaning roofs in Tampa, FL.
The "new roof cleaning guys" are experimenting, and adding to the roof cleaning knowledge base!
I would encourage you and others�to "keep playing around" with different roof cleaning products.
I will be 65 in 11 years, and have NO Intention to be roof cleaning at that age.
It will be roof cleaners like you who will "carry the roof cleaning torch" someday.
IF you can find the time Mike, I think a dual delavan roof cleaning pump setup thread would be real cool.
As well as your experience with roof cleaning hose diameter, etc, etc.
As you well know, there is a LOT of deliberate roof cleaning misinformation on some other roof clening forums.
These selfish� idiots ridicule large diameter hose to stifle roof cleaning compatition.
They do not want people to have the non pressure�roof cleaning knowledge to make them competitive.

is there any�POWDER ( such as calcium chlorite) that can be mixed
with water to create a suitable cleaning solution?

This would help the occasional� roof cleaner be able to store
powder and mix as needed.

any ideas?

I have been TRYING for years to get� Calcium Hyplochlorite to work as a roof cleaning chemical here in Tampa.
I have experimented with some Catalysts to add to it to inprove it's roof cleaning effectiveness.
No luck yet
It does have some advantages as a roof cleaning chemical over SHC because there is no Sodium in it !
Sodium is Salt, and it can be hard on plants for those who do not take care to water and/or tarp to protect landscaping ad paint from the roof cleaning chemical.

Really This is what I have been looking for . I can't count how many times I have looked for the product to use. Is this it for real. I have been told that bleach is not the thing to use have i been told wrong Please tell.Drew's Roofing & Home Repair southport NC 28461

Chlorine is the approved chemical.

Yes Drew, this is for real.
This IS the RCIA roof cleaning board, home to hundreds of the best roof cleaners in America.
We all use pretty much the same roof�cleaning chemical, with a few variations.

about how long do you think i need to let it sit,to remove the stains,before you have to rise it away

It will vary,..but if you choose to rinse let it sit approximately 1/2 hour before rinsing. And in some cases a respray may be necessary.

I personally do not rinse any more,...other than for a maybe realtor who may be gonna show the house the next day or something. But really,...the roofs look 95% better just by application of the product. But with that being said,... I usually just let the rain take care of the rinsing.

Same here.� Make sure you bag the downspouts and dispose of them away from landscaping, wear a good chlorine mask and gloves.� The chemicals are much stronger and do a much better job.

OK... I have to ask.... The TSP that your using... is it truelly TSP or is it TSP Substitute? Here in MD we can't get or use TSP because phosphates are Hazmat and we would get smashed in fines and possibly locked up.

If it is true TSP... has anyone used the substitute stuff DAP puts out? And is it as effective?

I needed to add another specific procedure about the Apple Cider Sauce mix.

Pre-mix your bleach/water/TSP at your house.

Wait until you get to the jobsite, setup your hoses, ladder, etc. before adding the surfactant and alcohol, so your mix will be fresh.

Dawn and alcohol will weaken your bleach over time.

Mike, I just noticed this mix recipe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 15 gal 12.5% to 25 gal water is pretty strong for shingle roofs. Almost too strong IMHO. That ratio is not even 2-1, where we mix usually 3.5 or even 4-1 water to SH. Why so much SH?

One more thing about the alcohol: Are you using standard rubbing at 50%? I always use IPO at 99%. But if I can save a few bucks, then we'll just stick to the 50%

It works.� I have tried it at weaker mixtures, some roofs come clean some don't.�
The ones that don't I have to reapply several times, I just don't have the patience.

I really like how this mix works, it will knock out most roofs with one coat.

I buy 70% isopropol alcohol from Walmart in 32 ounce bottles for $1.70.

Most of the roofs I clean in NC are severely neglected, over 10+ years, and consume a lot of bleach to come clean.

Maybe your bleach is stronger than mine, that you can cut it down more.
