FYI, check out Wolman Wood Products on the web. The have a great wood certification program (still free or very little cost I believe) and excellent products. You will learn a great deal and find the preservative products and cedar roof restoration techniques you need to succeed in the wood restoration business. I know first hand, Dan, as I have been a Certified Wolman Contractor for almost 9 years. Hope this helps you and good luck.

I have experience cleaning cedar shake roofs.

Do not use linseed oil.� It is a natural food source for mold, algae.

I like Wolman's F&P or Ready Seal oil-based stains.

Do not use bleach to clean bare wood.

I always use a 3 step process for wood restoration.

1) Oxygenated bleach (sodium percarbonate) is best for wood.

2) Pressure wash with about 500-1000 psi.

3) Neutralize/brighten with Oxalic acid.

seal with a good quality oil-based stain w/o linseed oil.

Concerning a finish for cedar shake roofs, we have had excellent results with a product called Clear Wood Finish UV, made by Flood. It is water base, easy to work with, reasonably priced, gives a rich looking attractive finish, + is long lasting. It penetrates into the wood, +
also forms a repellent film. We have been using it for years on many jobs + have always had good results. It is also a labor saver in that it is to be applied wet on wet, for two coats.

I know this is a roof cleaning forum but I had toask if anyone has cleaned a dock ? iwas doing a job and I saw a few that I might get if I could make a showing on this first one. I need a product that won't kill the fish. work is work

Yes, use sodium percarbonate, pressure wash, and neutralize with a mild solution of oxalic acid.

Sodium percarbonate and oxalic acid will not be as strong as bleach and will do a better job.� Bleach is too harsh on bare wood.� It softens the fibers too much and removes the natural color.

Unless I am stripping a finish off of wood, I clean all wood the same.

Mike you mentioned sodium percarbonate to clean with, if this is a powder what ration do you use. I use wood cleaners from sunbrite but I have a chemical place here where I can get a lot of my stuff in raw form or in bulk like TSP, oaxlic acid so that would be a good thing to know if� I can get this in 50 pound bags like oaxlic acid.

Yes, a powder. I get it from Univar in 50 lb. bags. I also use it in my laundry. Works great.

It is 99% pure, so you are getting 4 times your money's worth compared to Oxy-clean.

I use 6 ounces/gallon sodium percarbonate plus 1 ounce/gallon /sodium hydroxide plus dawn

pressure wash

neutralize/brighten with 6 ounces/gallon oxalic acid.

For all wood surfaces.
