As you hopefully KNOW by now, there are different roof types.
Do you think we should have seperate certs for Metal, Tile, Wood Shake, and Shingles ?

Mechanics are certified in brakes, front ends, etc, etc.

Please vote in the Poll

Hey Nate, this is a cool forum, and has a LOT of gee whiz features, and new and different emoticons.
I LIKE the You Tube Embed tag, and some of the other stuff.
HOW did you get the emoticons to work ?
There is a WTF one too, LOL

All asphalt here in NC. I've only done one cedar shake roof and one metal roof. No tile.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus, one cert for all roof types.
You can really see your avatar on this forum!

I think 1 test would be ALOT easier on everyone involved. Makes people like myself who mainly do asphalt do a little homework and that way if we come across something else we have the knowledge to do the job right instead of skrewing someones roof up or turning the job down because we dont know what we are doing.

I think seperate tests are in order since all pose different challenges in surface cleaning, safety and liability issues.
The use of that man-lift for the slate roof job is perfect proof.

I think one certification would be easier for the consumer to understand.

In my HUMBLE opinion, a written test will work out better with a multiple answer format.

My opinion is the Written test should also be password protected and be backed with an encryption lock so that the answers and the test can be controlled and no CHEAT SHEETS can be easily made or distributed.

I believe that some of the areas of coverage should consist of:

1. Aptitude- Do you know how to measure roof pitch? Do you or do you NOT use 3000 psi and a ZERO degree tip to clean a asphalt shingle roof? etc.

2. Right Equipment- What are the proper ways to couple two pieces of AG hose, what pumps, hoses, what flow rates, tip sizing

3. Fall Protection- What to use and why

4. Chemicals -Descibing what the main chemicals do and how to use them properly and why and in what scenarios
and what CHEMICALS to NOT mix together and why

5. Roll Out and Roll Up- Proper proceedures

6. Landscape and Foliage Protection-

What to protect and Why?

When to tarp and when NOT to?

What not to cover with tarps. Why spray clear water on plants before starting a job. When NOT to and WHY.

7. Runoff- What do do with excess unused chemical. Proper disposal techniques.

8. Licensing- Why be licensed and insured? Why is it important to obtain a business license? The pitfalls of "SHORTCUTS"

9. Basic Safety Equipment- Why use a Fall Protection System? What is a Fall Protection System? Do you have a CPR and First Aid Certification? Why is this important? Do you have the proper footwear? Eye protection. Hearing protection? What type of clothing to wear? What not to wear and why.

10.OSHA Guidelines- What is a MSDS? Why should you carry one for chemicals onboard your rig? Who may ask for them? Why must you comply? Various laws on chemical storage, labeling, handling, etc.

Just like a "real" test in a college or at the Motor Vehicles Division when getting your Drivers license. Lets make this test professional and THE STANDARD by which "OTHERS" will follow.

Better to put in the time now to get it right then bring it to the community "Half Baked" and it be considered a "joke" rather than a well deserved, testing credential that VALIDATES one's abilities, and aptitude to perform the required service of PROFESSIONAL ROOF CLEANING.

Make CERTIFICATION mean something. "If you can't STAND for something, you'll FALL for anything"

Just my .02 cents. :)

I think David is right!!
exams most have the worscasionario questions like... storage ( this is something I haven't read alot of in this foroum) what that's the fire deparment thinks about keeping SHC in your garage, your basement, your shop, your shed or in your driveway?

Are we using our roof cleaning tanks for the same chemicles or are we allow to use our tanks with other chemicles like...acid or antibacterial ajax ( I have read that this type of mix creates a foam like a volcano and if your tank is not vented or lid is ooff it may Booom!!

hey!! is just my opinion!!

I think that the majority of us do Tile and Shingled roofs and 1 certification for Tile and Shingled roofs should suffice. Of course there are foam over roofs, vinyl, aluminum, built up cement/stone etc etc, but if a a person is truely a "certifiable" pro, he should be familiar with cleaning all of those. I certainly have done every roof made-I believe?
No, I wouldn't go to a foot doctor for brain surgery or a mechanic certified as a brake man for AC work, but this is much different!
If a person hasn't been at this long enough to have done most everything, then he shouldn't be certified at all. Are we to imagine that if he is certified here as a tile roof cleaner, that he is not going to take a job cleaning shingles?
I believe that if a professional can prove himself to have years of roof cleaning experience and abides by your certification guidelines of posting 100 posts and taking the verbal test [which should include questions that show that he is prepared to do a professional job on all types of roofs] then that should be it and not become a long drawn out process of getting certified on shingle, tile, foam over roofs, vinyl, aluminum, built up cement/stone etc etc. It would become a ridiculous chore of multiple certifications!
This appealed to me because of the simplicity of your original idea.

I know pressure cleaning and chemical cleaning quite well, but I don't understand computer stuff much! smile.gif
I don't see how to vote in your pole?
It only shows 14 votes and that's not much of a representation for such a large group as we have here? no

It is a Moot point Chuck.
We already decided NOT to.
One roof cleaning certification is enough.
Hey, IS Sarasota the market you want to target ?
TELL me where you want to work, and I will fix it ?
