Controlling Run-Off
Permalink

I am fairly new to roof cleaning and I have a couple of questions. My first question is how do most of you control the run-off coming off of the roof. Secondly, what do you do about a home that has gutters that are draining into the yard or flower bed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Control the runoff by controlling how heavy you are spraying the roof. With gutters, most will bag the gutters, or flood them.

Schizophrenia setting in maybe?

if not bagging the runoff:
Divert the runoff away from the plants, turn the cement flow gizmo's (forgetting the name...just woke up) and dig a small trail with the heel of your shoe so the runoff follows the trail to a safe area. Shoot water up the downspout for 5 seconds or so and see which way the water flows when it drains - that's the way the roof mix will drain.
Flood the plants, before, during and after to keep any mix that gets on the plants diluted and washed off. Are you working solo or using a ground man? I've seen some people use water hoses and sprinklers to help but haven't tried that myself yet. I'm still new myself....so take my suggestions with a grain of salt (pun intended).

If the roof has gutters that it runs into then we stick a gutter cane in the gutter and turn the water on full blast to dilute the roof cleaning solution before it comes down the gutters.  If the gutter down spout empties into a flower bed or where there are plants then we add plastic downspout diverters an channel it into an area where there are no or fewer plants.

First try to minimize the amount of solution you're spraying. If the gutters discharge onto the ground, use bag collectors. If they discharge into a buried drain pipe you are usually ok without a bag. just make sure an excessive amount of run-off does not drain into the pipe.

I have a job coming up that is a three story house with a lot of roof. Gutters run straight into the ground. I'm planning on flooding the gutters like suggested. The lady has asked me three times already if I'm going to burn her plants or grass... I assure her that we won't and will take high precaution. These gutters run under the yard into the ground. Will the runoff burn the grass even if diluted properly?
