The subject of roof cleaning respirators is one with many opinions. Some experts advocate a full face respirator, others like a 1/2 face respirator, and some simply use a disposable dust mask!
And of course, some choose not to wear any protection. Here are some cheap, disposable respiRATORS with exhale valves http://www.pksafety.com/mo23ma.html
I always wear a full face respirator with chlorine/mercury cartridges. Doesn't matter if I'm washing a house or cleaning a roof, I alway wear it. I guess being a painting contractor for so long, I've been conditioned for wearing it. You only get one set of lungs!

Those are always best, because they protect the full face. But, you know as well as I do Brother, many will not buy one, so here is a cheap "better then nothing" alternative. http://www.pksafety.com/mo23ma.html
The exhalation valve is slick, and make a huge difference. Hey, have you ever stood back and watched an actual roof cleaning, when a guy is walking on the roof, as he cleans it ?
You can see the "roof cleaning chemical cloud" he walks right through, when he is breathing deeply!
It is these atomized particles, not so much the particle free fumes that I think are the biggest problem.
Only a fool that has no regard for his well being would ever clean a roof with SH and no respirator... As many times as Chris has told us of his problems from not wearing a respirator people should listen. Yes wearing them is a pain, but listen to Chris wen he talks to you as he wheezes or coughs tells a story.

Yes, anyone who has ever called, or talked with me in person knows that the roof cleaning business has ruined my lungs.
20 some years ago, when I started cleaning roofs, I was 38 years old, and lived in a Gym, 3 to 4 times a week.
I had little idea what would happen to me, 20 years, and thousands roof cleanings later.
But all it takes is ONCE for you to inhale the atomized SH Particles, especially when any soap is used. The Soap increases dwell time all right, dwell time on the lung tissue!
And guess what ? You can't really feel it eating up the lung tissue either!
Over 50 percent of hairdressers develop Chronic Lung Diseases, and all they breath in is basically hairspray!
Yes, there is good money in the roof cleaning business, but there is also the reality of chronic lung disease for many of us roof cleaners down the road! Something for all you people reading this, who will go out at cut prices (you know who you are).
Yea Chris you are so right , I allways wear one when cleanning and also spray painting, they have a good cheap disposable one at harbour frieght for about $16 , its a real chemical resperator, I use them for aprox 6 months then get a new one , thanks for everything Dabber Steve
I called PK Safety to get that mask and they said it is not for chlorine. Said you need one with replaceable cartridges
A respirator with replaceable cartridges rated for Chlorine use is always the best. But these are certainly better then nothing. I see zillions of roof cleaners out working with NO Respirators, at all.
