QUESTION: Why do some shingled roofs turn black on the ridge caps while the rest of the roof is fine?

Thought I knew everything by now confuse biggrin

Every once in a while I come across a roof with triple the algae buildup on the ridge caps.

I see no reason for this?

I am leaving soon to look at this roof in person, the owner said the ridge caps were terrible.  Before leaving I checked Google and here is a picture:

Because the ridge caps get wind from ALL directions full of algae spores.

On shingle roofs there's two ways to cap. One is with caps made to be caps. These have Algae resistant properties!
Some guys use 3 tab shingles and "make" caps out of them. These caps will not have AR properties.

This is an interesting topic. I have noticed that hip and ridge tiles seem to get a lot more lichen than field tile. I figured there must be some difference in the make up of the batch.
