These people are crooks and deserve it!
I had a woman cheat me out of $440.00 last year.
She drove away like 20 minutes before we finished.
When I called her, she gave me an email address and said to bill her x-husband, that he was responsible for the bill. Yet she hired me!
She won't answer calls and nothing was ever replied to from that email.
Thought about throwing some dark brown exterior stain filled ballons on her roof some dark night!
But never did it.

get a deposit. Qualify them as a paying customer, or no deal.

File a mechanic's lean against them. List both husband and wife's name. They will be summoned to court. If they don't respond an arrest warrant will be issued. The NJ police won't go looking for them but one day if they get pulled over the warrent will show up and the cuffs will go on.

 OH, I can TELL you stories!

One customer went inside, just as we finished, and then refused to answer the door! I called the Police (vs going to jail for assault), and the Cops told me it was a Civil Matter!

I hired the best lawyer in Boston and they charged over $300.00 per hour. I got a judgment but to this day will get nothing because customer filed bakruptcy. The worst of it was the lawyer told me that a contract is only worth the paper it is written on. One last thing , and mechanics leans are a good idea and I did secure the home in this case, but when the bank reposes the home the mechanics lean doesnt exist any more. So from here on out I do not provide any service with out payment and If customer doesnt want to use my services because of this then let them screw someone else

I realize all markets are different but I think what Brian is saying is that the homeowner must be home before he engages in work. When I had my lawn care business, I would do work and then have to chase the customer for payment. We even did a huge clean up for a person, who as it turns out was not the homeowner, but a representative for the property preservation company handling the work for the bank. It was only $1200 job but never again. If my customer is not home, we do not do the work. All payments are required at the completion of work. Gas stations and supermarkets do it. Why shouldn't we.

 I understand about the customer having to be home, but well over 1/2 of the work we do, people are not home. We used to leave invoices, but now we call back for credit card numbers.

Only one unpaid so far in nearly 100 jobs, since we have started doing this. OH, this thread is heading for the premium section!

Here in Tampa, we can not get the high prices you guys do up North, so we must do a lot of roofs to make our money.
