Apex putting the big boy pants on

I was contacted by Keystone College to put a bid in for 3 main roofs, and several other roofs on campus. I typically range about .25-29c per sqft. I had no problems measuring the rest of the buildings but this one is a bit of a challenge. The title is big boy pants because for this job I will be needing a boom lift. I have never used a boom lift but I am excited to do it, also I have some concerns about the roof coming clean.(Pics to explain what I mean) This is a very small amount of roof, but it takes ALOT of effort. The top of the building is a rubber roof, I won't be cleaning that, just the manserd part.  I have also uploaded some videos because there are some weird angles and landscaping in the front of the building.

Here are a couple of videos, I did my best to get the roof and landscaping in the same shot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJjHno53huU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGW13tLozuo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67oYULxQ1Wg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUJRCe46vPA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZENun20yXk

The other issue is the roof, the front looks totally black, with some light green moss/lichen where the roof starts. The back (south side) has black just under the ledge, but the rest of the roof is grey, which appears to be the original color,  the photo of the back appears to have some spilled white paint on the shingles.

Tell me what you guys think?

Tomorrow I plan on getting some boom prices, but how much do I need? There is a sidewalk that runs up the front, thats really about all the pavement I have in the front.

Thanks,

Dan

I think You could use a 40 ft ladder and do that job no problem you might be able to even get away with a 32 fter. The Lift is going to around 300 per day plus insurance and gas.

Will they allow you to go up on the roof? Drop a rope down and pull your spray line up. Hang over the edge and spray. It looks like it would be very easy to do that way. That's how we did a YMCA a couple years ago.

If you get a boom try not to run it on the side walk, if it cracks you will be replacing it.

Dan,

Questions...What material(shingle or rubber) is on top of those dormers? Do they have to be cleaned also? How deep is the landscaping?

Based on the two students entering the building, the size of the windows and the depth of the landscape you'll need at least a 40' ladder. Even then you might just reach the gutter line. Larry has a point about doing it from above. Is this an option?

If you need a set of fresh eyes to look at it we can meet and take a road trip. Like Eric stated I'd be happy to assist as long as you buy coffee(yes I work cheap).

Ray from Spray Wash will have some sound ideas as well.

Call me when the opportunity presents itself.

Hank (The devil's advocate)

Thanks guys for all of the input, to help answer some more questions. The VERY top is rubber, there is a roof hatch which I had asked about. But, spraying down isn't viable because the white edge above the dormers. Also 40ft Ladder may reach, but with all the landscaping and a significant amount of dormers, I would be putting this ladder up so many times google wouldn't be able to calculate it. After a nice conversation last night with Ray, he was steering me towards the 50ft lift. Ray recommended buying some thick plywood. In order to do this roof, I would need to get drive the lift on the sidewalks, only in the front, the side and rear can be accessed from blacktop.

To those offering some help, if the opportunity presents itself and you would like to come, that would be great. Since I have never done this before, my main concerns are this.

1. Will the boom get everywhere I need to go( on sidewalks, between landscaping)
2. Prevent any damage. (Lift, building , my body)
3. Fairly price the job.
4. Adequately complete the scope of work

Dan, footprint of that 50 foot Genie lift will be about 12 x 12, but not including the tongue, When the outriggers are extended. The ground needs to be relatively level but not completely flat.

Folded up the lift is about 8 foot wide, to get into some pretty narrow spaces.

Like I said last night if you're an adrenaline junkie you'll love working off a lift.

Here is another option. Not sure what your shooting with but most pumps will reach at least 35 ft very easily. Add an extention to your wand. 6 ft or 10 ft and spray with a 0030 tip. You will have no problems reaching that height and save yourself the hassle of the lift.
