I just got done talking with Ray from SprayWash, up in Tallahassee Florida. I love talking with Ray, and he is kicking butt up in the Tallhassee area!
I sense some of you guys seem to see Roofing Contractors as "Their Enemies". IMHO, this is a serious mistake! Every roof cleaner should target roofers, hell, even do their houses for free if you have to, to show them what you can do!
Back in the day, I rented a hall, and my ex girlfriends brother was the lead singer in a great Country band. I got their band to play for very little money, and I got the Hall for the night by trading roof cleaning for it!
To make a long story short, I invited every roofer, painter, yard guy, realtor, etc, etc to this free, all you can eat and drink Party.
Total cost for all of it was under 1500.00, and it was a HUGE Success!
WE had nearly 400 people show up (everyone loves a free Party), and it was THE BEST money I ever spent!
The next month, we got enough referrals to Pay for the Party, and to this Day, we dominate the Tampa area with our Roofers, who send us Tons of work!
Chris, I love ya bro but I have to disagree. Roofing contractors are in the biz to REPLACE shingles and NOT to recommend peoples to clean them. I ran into this today. I cleaned a roof and did a house wash and a homeowner next door came and spoke with me about cleaning his roof. He said he had a roofing contractor take a look at his 12 year old, dirty roof that has algae on it, and told him it needs to be replaced for a cost of $14,000.
PLEASE tell me roofing contractors are not the enemy with a straight face after looking at the link below.

I had originally made this mistake, I thought roofers were the enemy. Maybe because I was just getting into business and I didn't want any kind of competition. Now I couldn't agree more, I would love to talk to some roofers and get some referrals. I am sure I could send a few there way. I have done several estimates where I tell the customer they need a new roof. But I have no roofer to recommend.
I need to be educated on how to "work" with roofing contractors and score some business from them. In my experiences, they are out to make money and will flat out lie to a homeowner to make a complete roof over even when a roof does not need to be replaced.
Here in Tallahassee, an average re-roof of 2,000 sf goes for about $12,000 - $14,000. I would be able to give about a 15%-20% referal fee to a contractor if he contacted me to clean a roof that he was contacted to replace because the homeowner "thought" it migh need to be replaced.
Tough choice for the contractor (not) .... $2400 referral fee or $14,000 to replace it. I'm thinking a roofing contractor is going to forget your contact information real quick and make a few doom and gloom YouTube videos.

Guys there are fellow roof cleaners that are competition and drowning an industry, ask Dan from pristine. Of course there are some good and some bad. I actually was recommended by a roofer. I don't know who he is, but the HO told me the builder had recommend me. Her roof was only 10 years old with black streaks. He wasn't going to replace that. Ed I also agree with the economy, you want to find the roofers that are doing well, not the ones you find advertising on craigslist.
In this economy, roofers may be looking for additional income, or even a complete change of venue. I think it could be a double edged sword.
true. some roofing companies are starting to clean also.. i work with one company where ive known the owner since high school.. I AM his cleaning division so there is no worry.. but the other guys I worry about.

Well, I get Tons of work, and I mean Tons of work, from my roofers. Sure, they want to replace a bad roof, but what happens when they replace a square or two of shingles, and the replacement shingles do not match the dirty ones ? They are going to have you clean the roof. Or, what happens when a customer of theirs calls because their 6 year old roof is dirty that the roofer put on ?
I see both sides and I think it depends on if the contractor is honest or a crook. I will say we have had a lot of leads from a local large roofing contractor, he loves what we are doing. We even cleaned all of his roofs and his rentals. He said it was embarrassing to be a major roofer with filthy shingles...
Have any of you guys considered starting a roofing business? Next season I'll be adding window cleaning but I'd like to at least take the time to look into it.

Funny you should mention that because we just opened Ugly Builders a division of Ugly Enterprises to keep us busy and out of trouble this winter.
We have sold a few jobs and we just landed a good size job from a roof cleaning we did on the house. The owner wanted new windows, siding, doors 2 steel and 1 double wood, arched porch front overhang and shutters. We sold the job and I had the architect draw the arched porch and we ordered the windows vinyl 2 tone clay outside & white inside. The job total sale price came to $44,759.00.
I cut and pasted a porch on his house and he loved the new look so that sold the job. I attached the window order and the blueprints we submitted to the city last week and the house with the fake cut and pasted porch.
Anyone else need help with any of this stuff shoot me a email... we are currently working on a website for the new division....
I want to say thank your, to Chris for posting this. About 2 days after this was posted, I was cleaning a roof, and across the street was a roofer. He started walking over to ask some questions. Has been in the family business since 1957, seems like a good guy. Hopefully started a relationship for some more work down the road.
Dan, I swear, roofers can help you like you would not believe. When I get a call like this "Hello Chris, my name is Kevin O'Leary, and Sidney from Tampa Roofing said to call. I need to have my roof cleaned", I jump for joy. These roofer referred costomers are not going to shop. They have a level of trust for you, right from the start. No "selling" needs to happen, the roofing contractor has already done that, for you!
I swear, seldom a month goes by that we do NOT get a referral from one of our roofers! Do nice stuff for the roofers who help you. And, take extra care not to kill plants!
Think about it ? The roofer has put his name on the line for you, so do not make him look bad, by killing plants!
Because I have cultivated roofers for many years, I use them to close jobs, when I get an undecided customer.
I was up against another roof cleaning company, and was asked to match his super low price. Instead, I told this customer to call several of the roofers who know us, and our work.
The roofers he called actually sold the job, by selling me!
