Does the roof cleaning industry harm the roofing industry?
I doubt it affects it adversely, if both the professional roofing contractor and the professional roof cleaning contractor are honest and fair with the homeowner.
My point being:
1. I consider myself an honest roof cleaner. So, if I am asked to clean a roof, that I [after over 20 years experience] feel is a better candidate for replacement, I tell the homeowner so and recommend a local roofing contractor to them.

2. If a roofing contractor is asked about roof replacement and he recognizes that the roof is not in need of replacement, then he would recommend to the homeowner, that it really just needs to be cleaned, not replaced and have the name of a reputable roof cleaner, who cleans roofs according to the roofing manufacturer's specifications. They can network back and forth that way.
So, no, if both are honest, neither will have an adverse affect on the other business.

I know that roofing contractors have to have training and licensing by the state [here in Florida]
Roof cleaning is not the same. But there are places to learn proper roof cleaning and to gain "certification" such as The Roof Cleaning Institute Of America. I am a certified roof cleaner myself from the RCIA. But, I had already used this gentle roof cleaning method, since 1991 and was certified in 2009.
Below is some pretty clear info on how to clean roofing and how not to use a pressure device, such as a pressure washer, cement surface cleaning machine, pitch witch or even a broom!
They suggest cleaning roofs chemically, not blasting the dirt and algae off, along with the shingle granules, paint or glazing on some tile or blowing the cement holding the tile ridge caps in place.

Below is a partial excerpt cut and pasted below from ARMA:
Algae discolorations to remove from roofing surfaces, applying a solution of chlorine bleach, trisodium phosphate, {TSP}and water. Solutions for these ingredients depend on the amount of discoloration. Solutions range to one cup TSP and 2.5 gallons each of bleach and water. First, gently disperse this solution on the roofing surface. Avoid scrubbing the surface, as this friction may loosen and remove granules. Caution! High pressure washing systems for algae removal should not be used.

Owens Corning Roofing Manufacturers say

"USE CHLORINE and TSP" "DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER"

Being a roofer I have found offering this service to my clients is in their best interest. Vs. most roofing contractors misleading the customer by saying they need a new roof. A roof is the biggest appliance in ones home, by maintaining this appliance (roof cleaning & repairing) with regular maintenance you can extend the roofs life by several years. Guess who they will call when it is in the need of replacement?

Ps. Great info u have provided! I learn so much direct from u guys spending the time to spread the word on doing things the right way!

This issue has been on my mind alot lately as I've gone door to door here in Ames Iowa offering inspections and cleaning quotes. Seems like everybody trusts their roofer, they are the "industry experts" in people's minds. What everyone seems to forget is that your roofer is a SHINGLE SALESMAN. Yes, I am a cleaning service salesman (and technician), but why do people inherently trust their shingle salesman but take my offer for a second opinion/inspection with a grain of salt?  The answer is because in Iowa roof cleaning is new. It takes time, repeated exposure, large investment of money and a plan to warm people up to something they percieve as innovative.

So, to get back on topic, ideally the two industries (roofing and roof cleaning) are complementary but in practice (at least in a market like Iowa where roof cleaning is new) I think that roofers are doing a huge diservice to clients who don't know about roof cleaning. My biggest competitors are roofers. I say this because most of my potential clients (I define this as anyone with a roof that has gloeocapsa magma stains, but whose roofing system is not otherwise in need of replacement), are planning on replacing their roof in the near future because a roofer told them to. The roofer in Iowa currently does not carry the burden of demonstrating the relative advantage of his service over mine, even though his costs 20 times as much. I hope to change that.

I have to say when I started a few years ago roofers and I exchanged some pretty ugly glances { ok I'm ugly } And I never had a problem telling a HO that I couldn't help them. But as we all know a new roof shows black streaks within five to seven years. So what does a HO do when they get these streaks on thier new roof? They call the Roofer and complain. Now this year I find the roofing company is glad that I'm around or atleast roof cleaners. They might not be happy that a HO chooses to clean their roof but when someone with a new roof is complaining in a couple years they love giving out your info.

Replacing your roof will not solve the mold problem, With its food source being the limestone filler in asphalt singles, Roof Algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) has successfully migrated everywhere in the USA and is thriving in the humid climates of Tampa, Clearwater, Safety Harbor and St Petersburg areas of Florida.
