Gaining shooting distance with an air diaphragm pump
Permalink

I am using an air diaphragm pump setup with a 9 gallon, 11 cfm compressor.  I can't seem to shoot more than about 20 feet.  I know some guys can get about 40-50 feet shooting distance but maybe that is with a different type of setup.  I tried using a larger nozzle (about 4 mm), but I still only can shoot about 20 feet only with more volume.  Anyone familiar with my setup who can can offer some advice?

Thanks!

Snap a 0020, a 0030 or a 0040 tip on and you will reach almost double. I use a 0030 tip for distance shooting and get 35 to 40 ft with the same setup.

I think I am using a 0020 and have tried up to 100 psi. Increasing the psi over 75 doesn't seem to help. I'll try increasing the nozzle to 0030 and 0040 and see what happens.

also if your hose is 1/2" id or smaller that will cut your ability to shoot well.

Hmmmm.  I think mine is 5/8.  Should I still be able to get at least 30 feet range?

Exactly what pump are you running? 1/2 inch hose is fine and will get you 30-50 ft depending on the pump and nozzle size.

It's an ALL-FLO KYNAR 3/8" diaphragm.

you should be running the psi at 90 and be using a 0030 tip and you will hit 30-35 ft. What is your air compressor rated at?

Thanks for the info.....I'll try it at 90 psi and get a 0030 tip.....not sure what the compressor is rated. I think it's 11 cfm.

Try not to set your psi over 100. The sudden burst of psi can damage the diaphragm. Get an external regulator that you can set between the pump and the compressor. You can get them at Lowes or HD for $10-$15.00. It will save your pump.

Amen to the second regulator! I get mine from Harbor Freight, and always remember to bleed the water from your compressor.

Here in humid Tampa, we do it once a week.
