Lichen Roof Cleaning Progression Thread

I treated a nasty Lichen covered roof today. There was some GM but mostly hard lichen. Lichen tends to be the hardest to remove and does a lot of damage to the roof.

I will be posting follow up pictures after rain storms and over time so we can see how long it takes for the stuff to wash away.

If you feel like posting feel free but this is mostly for some lichen cleaning education!

Zach I did the front side on mine today and my neighbor (grandmother in law) to get my feet wet and some pics. Her roof was covered in GM and a good amount of lichen and mine a lot of moss. I learned that I need to use more surfactant to get more cling! What mix did you use on that roof? I bet I would have benefited by using some alchol in the mix. Any one know a good place to get it in bulk?

Best results for instant lichen removal, Spray it let it dwell for about 20minutes then take the hose, the light pressure from the hose will knock off about 70%. The other 30 needs some weathering. I am curious to see how this turns out.

I did not rinse at all! I'm not against it or anything, but if there was ever a house to not rinse it would be this one. She is trying to sell it and it's old. I would fear excessive granule loss on this one.

All of the jobs that I have done in the past, I haven't rinsed. Today because it was a low pitch roof I rinsed. I don't think their would have been enough flow to knock it off. It was also a brown roof, so granule loss wouldn't have been as noticeable.

Nice photos, I love doing a big Lichen job like that late in the year. When you come back in the spring it's perfect. My first year I would rinse that roof and what a mistake that was and still is. Leave it for mother nature " She brought it into this world and she can take it out! "

Do not add alcohol to your mix it does nothing but make the mix dangerous. The moss and lichen will fall off over time maybe 2 weeks maybe 2 months.

I have cleaned some lichen and moss jobs back in october, some lichen is still there. Also, there is dead white moss, that is pinched inbetween the shingles, it just needs a little nudge with the garden hose, and it comes right off. But I don't for see mother nature helping since its already been 5 months.

We did several Fire Stations at the end of last Fall. One in particular is on the way home and the peaks were COVERED in Lichen. After we were finished, the dead...and now bright white....Lichen stood out like a sore thumb. First month...no change. Second month...Nada (Cr@p!). End of the third month comes and all of a sudden, gone.

It just up and disappeared within a weeks time. Stopped by and spoke to the Chief and he is thrilled with the results. Now that it is Spring, I will be dropping off some discount coupons for the guys at the station.

Good stream,
The lichen on the central California coast is probably our toughest to remove, particularly on tile. The gm removes quickly and impresses the client. The moss and lichen take there time.
