Thought this might be helpful to some, I don't know if its the best way to calculate roof area without actually getting up there and measuring, but its worked okay for me. 

You need a good idea of their pitch and Google Earth. Use the measuring tool in Google Earth to get the projected area (ie footprint) of the roof then multiply by the number in the attached chart based on the pitch.
