This home in the Memorial Area of Houston has a product called "Gutter Helmet", which is an aluminum cover that fastens to the outside edge of the gutters and extends up the roof covering the first two courses of shingles. This type of gutter guard is impossible to clean the debris from inside the gutters without removing of the entire system. Affordable Roof Cleaning of Texas will removing the six inches of built up pine needles tommorow and is scheduled to clean the aglae from the 85 square 9 year old compostion shingle.

The problem I see with the helmeted gutters, which include Leaf Guard, GutterMax and Gutter Helmet, is the granules from the shingles will flow into them and fill them up. I believe some of the companies offer a free of charge cleaning (which they should because of the cost of some of these systems are in the 4 figures). The Gutter Helmet is the only one that I see that creates a slightly lesser slope at the eave which causes the tree debris to dam up. This particular house was a perfect example with pine needles so thick they were composting up there. Luckily for us and the homeowner the inside of the gutters don't need to be clean, we just need to clean the pine needles that are sitting on top of them and on the roof.
I hate the gutter helmet! It traps in debris and is a pain to get out, the "Liquid Adhesion Theory" is just a theory too. I have seen heavy rains and less go right over the system. Flo Free is the best gutter guard system out there IMHO. Put them on my house this summer and no leaves and rain goes into the gutter where it belongs.
