I decided to try out the local newspapers Group Deal to help get the phone ringing in the slower periods.. It started today and it's 50% off of house wash and some misc. pressure washing where they spend $50 and get $100 worth of cleaning.

So far, I've gotten 7 calls this morning, all homes are over 4,000 Sq. Ft. and all want a price for 3+ services. None of them want to pay online, so I won't be splitting the cost with the local paper (I feel bad about that, but these homes don't qualify anyway because they are well over the 2,500 square foot deal price).

I'm certainly going to do some work for people and not make much money, but so far, so good!

 

Anyone else do this? Upselling is key here or you won't make squat!

Yeah, local paper. So far, several hits, upsold 85% or so, and only a few that want nothing more than what was offered. This is a new service for this paper, so the customers are confused and as a result, the paper is getting ripped off a bit..

Here's been my experience with the group on/ living social.... Cheap, cheap, cheap people. My best friend did it, sold 150 in 48 hours. Was only able to upsell about 15% of buyers. Folks with houses larger than The max sqf were asking for only one or two sides of the property to be done. The only saving grace was that 30% of buyers never redeemed. if you are not having to profit share with the paper and can sell consumer direct, it may be worth it.

Ray, thank you for your feedback. That's why I chose to go with the local paper, not as many people will see it as we got no more than 20 calls. Most of them wanted more than the deal offered, so overall it was a success. Also, most people were old and refused to pay online. I talked to the person from the paper and they said to just keep that money if they wouldn't pay online.

Living social contacted me, but I really don't think I want to work my butt off for pennies as I think the loss would be much greater on a larger scale. The only positive is that you get exposed to more people (neighbors etc), and you have the opportunity to up sell.

Another positive to groupon is that it made his SEO and rankings go off the chart for a while! Come to think of it, that was the only positive.

i got 2 jobs this week from a groupon i ran that expired over 2 months ago. they saw it and forgot about it until now. groupon said their mailing list in central iowa is something like 120,000 if i remember right. anyone can pm me if they want to know more about my experience.
