got my 1st "call" of my short roof cleaning career, there was a downspout that my ground must've missed that burned a small section of grass ... i'm heading out there with sod, but was wondering if you guys hold your helper accountable? going forward i was thinking about telling him if anything gets damaged that's his responsibility it comes out of his pocket.

Like the saying goes "grass happens" Unless you flush out your gutters you will kill some grass it happens. Some things like bushes and grass just get burned or killed. You can water till blue in the face but its gonna happen.

Most states don't allow you to charge your employees for their mistakes.

As the "Boss" /"supervisor"/"owner" it is your responsibility to make sure everything is done and done the way it is supposed to be done. Now when they mess up after you tell them exactly what to do then you take action like making them fix it on their time. You cannot charge these guys. Remember you make the big bucks they make enough to survive."Maybe"

Legally, non-exempt employees must be paid for all time worked.  You risk being sued for backpay otherwise.  I only mention this to be helpful.

Our motto is simple. "The beatings will continue until morale improves." Seriously though, two of my guys are professional firefighters & the other two are NC National Guard. While some mistakes are made, all four are used to working with their hands AND thinking for themselves. All four try extreemly hard not to repeat any mistakes and that is reflected in their pay.

My vote is for the shock collar. biggrin

Mike...Just remove the old sod with a flat shovel and replace with new sod. Sod is planted on fertilized soil and when harvested, a small layer of that soil comes up with it.

Usually when my help messes up on something like this I look at it as my fault for not preparing them better. Which obviously I didnt. Then I talk to them about it and stress the importance of using it as a learning experience.

Now for things such as leaving tools behind, breaking things because of carelessness, etc I'll make them pay me back for that. Not sure if thats legal or not, but that is the agreement we came to in tbe beginning.

lol, my guy is 6'5 235 lbs so i might need a step ladder to get the collar on ... i decided to just chalk it up as a learning experience & business expense ... i can't really get too upset, this is my 1st year for both me & him and if we need to throw down some sod on 1 out of 50 or so homes i'll consider myself lucky

Usually when my guys break something due to carelessness, I'll buy the first one and let them know the first one is on me but if it happens again, we will talk. As for something as minor as sod, I'd say it's a small cost of doing business. Is it a common practice, to bag the downspouts for runoff during the job?

we always bag the downspouts, this one was a little tough to see as it came out about 25 ft from the house and was pretty tough to see, my ground guy thought he had them all accounted for ... we caught the mistake and ran a hose next to it for about 20 minutes but i guess the damage was already done

Help is going to make mistakes like we made learning! employees are better educated than we were. They should make less mistakes and learn quicker. We teach them from our experience.

On the other hand, they are just there for the money. They dont enjoy our passion for cleaning and growing a company.

I prorated a year old leaf blower that was left on a job. 1/3 value new. "said you got to learn responsability if you want to be a lead tech. the boss when I aint there. you share same responability."

What if you put a crew out there that cost you a new pump every week, they dont rinse it, leave a 150 buck leaf blower on a job, average once a month, lol!!!

Getting off the truck is hard enuf, lol!!!

Mike do you use a blower from the ladder or only when you can walk on the roof ... Also do you use it for the granules or just the leaves? Gearing up for the fall.

This was our negligent damages clause. (attached) It was an addendem to our employee contract. You need to have an employment contract with every employee including your self.

Decipher please:

" As a TERRACLEAN employee, you are asked to follow company recommendations to minimize damages that are a parrot of your daily job"
