a light rain can cause a lot of damage ... we had some today in PA and i went back to the house and sprayed for a good 15 minutes, still nervous ... how long did you rinse before and after?

Dan, as an expert in Home Frontal View Design I would say the tree in question is no longer cute and seems far too large for that home. You probably did them a favor and being the alleged tree expert you may be doing them a solid by getting rid of it. You don't want a dead tree of that size linger waiting to be ignited by some freak spark. Keep us informed on the solution. If this is truly your fault try to help us all by solving the riddle so this doesn't happen again to yourself or one of us.
I also noticed the tree to the right of the tree in question showing similar signs. Curious if it's related.

This is a huge lesson for Northern guys as arborvitae are pretty common but can be a pistol to take care of. I found this on a web site, which is not good info I believe for you. Excessive watering is a bad thing for these as well as any sodium from the excerpt below

You can imagine what happened. We lost 38 of the 89 arborvitae trees and close to 30 flowering plants. I replaced all the badly burned shrubs. Is there any help for the remaining arborvitae? A: There is always hope, if they are showing signs of response. Keep up the treatments, but don’t overdo it!

Their Salespeople were so aggressive that if they lost a sale, they would come back in the night and actually kill plants, so you would get blamed!

The weather got us a few weeks ago, rain drained our roof mix into the downspout right into a bush, SOB! It pissed me off and embarrassed me, but we are watching the weather more now. It seems damage happens after leaving more so than when actually on the job, unless you're really careless.

I wonder if there is a way to leave a cloth boot on the gutter that would act as a filter for the residue. I am going to look into it. keep you posted

This may be a solution, one tablet in a double panty hose or cheese cloth tied to the downspouts. 100 tablets for $25.00 Each tablet filters 100 gallons of water.

Looking for filtration socks and I am sure there is something that would be a good tight fit to catch the flow. Ideas anyone?
I have heard some reports from others that it is getting to be an issue, now to find a solution, so we can eliminate this issue.

Vitamin C is a newer chemical method for neutralizing chlorine. Two forms of vitamin C, ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate, will neutralize chlorine. Neither is considered a hazardous chemical. First, vitamin C does not lower the dissolved oxygen as much as sulfur-based chemicals do. Second, vitamin C is not toxic to aquatic life at the levels used for dechlorinating water. Although ascorbic acid is mildly acidic and, in large doses, will lower the pH of the treated water, sodium ascorbate is neutral and will not affect the pH of the treated water or the receiving stream. Both forms of vitamin C are stable, with a shelf life of at least 1 year in a dry form if kept in a cool, dark place. Once it is placed in solution, however, vitamin C degrades in a day or two.

This happened to me a few years back... Lucky for me I knew about the guy doing it and the home owner had entry way cameras as many do in Florida and we saw him plain as day on video. Home owner filed charges and won , also the home owner works for the Florida today news paper and wrote a article about this guy...guess who is not in business anymore and guess who got a chit load of phone calls the next day!!! Doesn't pay to be a sore loser if you lose a job to another company.

Is it correct that it's the salts in the solution that kills a tree/bush after the mix has dried and rain takes it down the spout? After the mix dries the chlorine evaporates? True or not true?

I saw that to, I feel that it was probably a windy day it had to be why aren't hte shrubes dead! did the job 3 weeks ago. There is no reson to try and deny it so i will be removing tree, grinding stump and replaceing it with a 6 ft fur DAM WIND!!!
