Just the other day I was on my way to clean a home for a client and remove rust off the roof. Entering the backyard I came across a guy that was in and out of the house and I asked him if he lived there. He was only there to give some estimates on interior work and that the owner would be back shortly. I never mentioned my intentions because we started to chat about what he does and out of the conversation he told me he did drywall, paint etc. He looked at the house and said yea I can power wash and clean roofs. I was curious and I asked how do you clean roofs?? His reply was well it's very easy all you have to do is fire up the power wash and blast off all the black stains. He then said, but you have to adjust your pressure because you are going to blow off a couple of shingles on average. That just goes to show you the shingles are not put down properly he told me. I had to stop him right there and tell him he was wrong and that he would give professional roof cleaners a bad name. I also informed him he was damaging the roof and to just call me to clean it correctly because I was there to do the work. He was shocked and was speechless! Minutes later I hear him on the phone with the home owner saying hey I can power wash and clean roofs too. Priceless!!!!!!!!!! In the end home owner agreed with me and loved my work.

That is scary Chris! You would think more home owners would hire a professional and realize roof cleaning is a serious business. I strive to educate and I always tell home owners your home is your most important asset keep it that way! So far it is paying off when I educate them and show my work. More and more we must keep pushing to weed out the fly by nights.
It's amazing how any home owner would let a company use a power washer { even low pressure } on the roof. I just did a job this week that was done last year by a power washer, the black algae was back like crazy and the homeowner got no response from the guy. Not only was the algae back, but you could see the damage caused by the power washer as well. We took care of it the right way for him, no more worries!
I have come across many roof that were pressure washed in the past. The homeowner would inform me they just had their roof pressure washing just the year before. I educate them in the means of "no pressure" and how our process safely cleans all shingles while extending the life of their roofs. I just smile and laugh to myself when i see a pressure cleaner washing a roof in one of the neighborhoods im working in. I say to myself "they'll be calling me soon"
I lost a job early this year to a power washer. I had an estimate in the same area recently, so I drove by this house. It looked better, but I could still see where the algae streaks were. I didn't see any damage, but I also didn't look into his gutters, either.
