EPA issue with SH

Hey guys, I own a power washing business and Im starting to do roof cleaning using soft washing. First off I would like to thank everyone for their time and info that i have learned so much from, and I plan on becoming a paid member to further myself in this business.

I have a question about the use of Sodium Hypochlorite and its dilution ratio.  I asked my local EPA office if there were any rules or regulations on the use of SH. They told me as long as Im using it per instructions from the manufacture there is no issues. I looked at the pamphlet that came with the SH from the manufacture and it noted this

"Asphalt or Painted (sealed) wood Roofs and Siding. To control fungus and mildew, first remove all physical soil by brushing and hosing with clean water and apply a 5000 ppm available chlorine solution. Mix 5oz of this product per gallon of water and brush or spray roof or siding. after 30 minutes, rinse by hosing with clean water."

I was wondering if I used the 30 gal to 100 gal mix which is more than suggested by the maunfacture could I be fined if something went wrong?

I wanted to just make sure for my protection and to get more informed on the use in my state. They told me the label with the product is the law and if anyone was to complain or anything happened from my work they will investigate my use of the product and if I didnt follow the label I will be in trouble. They told me SH is considered a pesticied because its used to remove or control algae and that because it has a EPA reg # it has to be used accordingly. Has anyone had any problems with customers, neighbors or the EPA on the use of SH?

I rest my case! The answer is no,I have not had any problems. Pretty much everything you buy has those warning and I don't have a clue what your state regs are. I'm not sure what your business situation is but you should probably start out your worrying with insurance & licensing in your city,county or state.

I am licensed and insured, just getting familiar with the laws of SH being that its corrosive and can be harmful if not used properly.

Thanks and Aloha to you too Ted. I dont mean to stir up the pot but i just want to make sure Im providing a legit service to my customers with their and the safety of others in mind.

Here is a copy of the section of the pamphlet that indicates the use of SH for roofs. This pamphlet includes all the suggested use and ratios for each industry that uses SH. Sorry not sure if the font comes out clear.

The local Pesticide and Agricultural center here which also represents the EPA told me that i have to follow the suggested mixture if im using the product for what it is intended for.

Every cleaning industry has its concerns with the law in its local area, my state may be more strict than others, maybe because I live in paradise. I want to be able to clean roofs effectively and safely and I know that it can be hard to find the balance. The use of our chemicals speaks for its self because the results are amazing, but it also comes with its share of concerns, I hope I can find that balance and make money at the same time. Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

Is this a pamphlet from the chlorine institute? I am not quite following where you got this. A chemical supplier would supply an msds. I would be interested in seeing the entire pamphlet if you wouldn't mind scanning it.

It came with the container of SH from the manufacture, it  was in a plastic pocket that was attached to the container.

It gives a direction of use for different of types applications weither its for agriculture, swimming pools, sanitizing and it includes roof cleaning. 

If you notice at the top of the attached page it states "It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner with its labeling."  So if I was to use it a at stronger concentration and something was to happen, I would be in the wrong.

Does anyone have any type of instructions for use that comes with your SH from the manufacture?  Maybe my manufacture is the only one that includes this.

 sorry, looks like there are 2 different products using this same name somehow. I see both the above mentioned calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite using the same brand name. I have to admit I was/am a bit confused by that.
