Guys, this is my 2nd year in business and I am still part timing it. I'd like to go full time, but last year I was forced to and failed big time. Granted, I was only 2 or 3 months into my business and wasn't expecting to go full time anytime soon.
To build this business, I am working a full time day job at a high school in the IT department, working on my business 7 days a week (website, advertising, actual cleaning), and working with my wife to take care of an elderly man for another 20-30 hours per week. To say I/we are spread thin would be an understatement!
Is anyone else still busting their AZZ to get their business strong enough to stand on its own two feet?

Dave, what kind of job do you have that provides you with those kinds of hours? I was wondering the same thing about gas prices, etc.
I live in Branson missouri entertainment capitol of the world, and am lucky to have clay cooper as a great friend, I have beenwith him 4 yrs now. i run spot light, among other things Clay is the Prince of Branson I have attached a video of him and Mickey Gilley, Gilley has a theatre right down from Clays theatre, Clay has put our advertisment on his video screens this year behind the stage, Awesome.....

Phil, you must have read my mind, I was going to put a poll out in the open side the other day just to see how many guys are two income earners or is this the primary source. It has had me wondering how serious this business can be. I am assuming many work this and the wives work as well. Randy has talked about me getting a J.O.B, perish the thought... I have been independent for so long, cannot imagine having a boss. I need this business to thrive, cause it is the last train to Albuquerque! Lol... Kim R
Kim, my wife asked if she could stop working.. Perish the thought, ha ha ha.
It's tough working for someone else, especially when you start making money on your own. I can't tell you how many weekends I have doubled my weekly salary of my full time job. When that can happen consistently, it will be time to move on to running this business full time. Hopefully you and Randy can make it work, you both sure seem dedicated enough.

I am not really sure how to vote on this one. I am full time at my own business but am only part time working. I started out full time, working 6-7 days a week for a couple years. Then work slowed down and I started working part time for someone else. Then their work slowed down and I am back on my own. Which is good in a way because when you are working for someone else it is hard to dedicate enough time towards your own business. I love every minute of it when I am actually out working and making money but not so much when I am out spending money to try and find work.
So can I vote for the first two and maybe(hopefully not) the last one?

Last year was a lot slower roof cleaning then I expected. I thought I would easily clean two hundred roofs but I fell short, it definatley is the economy. I just wanted to roof clean two days a week but it has gotten to four with getting supllies and estimates and things to keep it going. I just clean roofs, at time a little siding cleaning. I am retired and my wife works so this has really helped to survive a slow economy. I don't think right now roof cleaning alone will support your family, but I think it can add to any " handy mans" business. There are alot of dirty roofs out there but alot of people are on hard times and some just don't care. It's a shame when they wait to long and have no choice but to replace it.
Good Point Jon, Spending to make money,it all has to be accounted for in the final talley. I have no problem putting in the 50 hours a week, just can't seem too be breaking the purse strings loose.. I will admit, I should be doing more than I have, so I guess I get what I put into it. I just really didn't expect to have to bust down doors to get things flowing. Getting your roof cleaned is just, well so obvious.. I thought. I have a lady that asked me to clean her exterior foyer only cause she is getting screening put up, go out to look at the house, filthy 400k house, then she asks me to clean some other areas in the front , I guess just the ones she looks at, her driveway is really big and black dirty, (on a satellite image you can see how black it is) but she tells me everything else is fine, and she has her to do list. Washing the whole house is on it. Her roof is streaked too. (Got off track, but one of the many reasons it makes it hard to get things moving fulltime.)
But I have got a few good ones, but this one we shall see if I can turn it around while at the job. I might just write my name with the surface cleaner on her driveway! lol
I'm cleaning roofs part time right now, I'm using roof cleaning to fill the gaps in work I have in my exterior remodeling company. I hope eventually I can make a full time transition into roof cleaning and maybe do the exterior remodeling in the winter months. Either way each one gets my foot in the door for the other. We did 45 roofs last year just working Friday's and an occasional Saturday. My goal this year is to at least double that.
Kim, I know what you mean about getting out what you put into it. There is a lot of times I should do more, but it gets depressing if you don't have work for a few days, and don't here back from the numerous bids you have out. You would think people would realize their house/roof despirately needs cleaning. I have been to so many EXSPENSIVE houses trying to upsell form something small to whole house cleaning and they're like "no I don't think it needs it yet" I was at a $4.5mil house recently to clean the srceen cage coloumns and the whole rest of the house and roof was covered in mold but they thought it wasn't time yet. Some people
Patrick, I don't just do roof cleaning. I do any exterior cleaning ie:high, low and no pressure. Although I try to focus more on roofs and then while I am there try to get the whole cleaning job. Plus living in Florida does have it's advantages. We get to work year round, except maybe one week where it is in the 50's and is too cold to go outside, and houses get moldy every year and need to be cleaned. Now if only the HO's knew that.

Starting a roof cleaning business is no different than starting any other business. It takes time, patience, money and a lot of hard work. DO NOT look for overnite success. It will not happen.
When I started my one hour photo lab back in 1985, one hour processing was something very new, Just like roof cleaning is today. A lot of people did not trust the process as far as quality, just like roof cleaning today. There were numerous one hour labs coming into existence, just like roof cleaners today. Within 18 months of me opening my lab, there were 13 other labs that opened also. A year later, there was only me and one other still in operation. Failure was NOT an option for me to consider. It took almost 3 years for us to become profitable, but we were determined to succeed. After 17 somewhat profitable years, we finally became a $MILLION company and closed after 22 years of operation. The digital explosion ended film processing.
So my point is, Plan your work, and work your plan. There will not be overnite success, but it WILL come if YOU are serious and not afraid of hard work. Hopes this gives some of you more hope for your business.

Im 100% confident that my business will be a success, now, but last year I was going in to everything blind, hoping for success without a real plan was just dumb!

One must crawl before they walk, start out the way that is right for you.
I started out part time. I HAD a really good job as a Motorola 2 way radio sales manager, company car, 55k a year, etc, etc, etc. Cell Phones made us 2 way radio guys obsolete, but by then we were full time.
