If you got a guy that seems to have a lot of ambition he may not be the guy for you. As most off you know i was a tree guy for a long time and i kept one of my guys with me. TREE WORK IS HARD we all can agree. Now this guy watched me doing the roof cleaning thing. not only did he watch the prossess he learend all my talent on how to sell it.
HE has no kids and is not maried, lives with his father. his father bought him a nice box truck there is no doubt in my mind he will do roofs for $150- $250 and why not he dont care if he can make $500 a week in 10 hrs why not?
now this guy lives right down the street and will do every thing that i would at a lower price. and all his family is in the real estate biz, so here comes the old fraze
its not what you know its who you know AND IM PISSED OFF!
MY ??? IS SHOULD I BE MAD or just let it go?

Take it as a lesson learned and put a non-compete in place. You should be able to find one in ten minutes on Google. Or a law office will wright one for ya for about $300. With your new competitor sounds like it would have been $300 well spent.
i do not blame him one bit. we have been together for over 15 years now he is doing something for his self but its going to kill the priceing for the industry around here just like tree work but i have a family and cant afford to be lazy so its probably no big deal he will make some $$ but in the long run no way~!

Dan, this is a low overhead service,..with his life as you described he may have a better profit margin than you and anyone else charging more money. So guys like him and the guys doing it part time will strive and be just fine in their own world. Nothing wrong with that neither,. dog eat dog.
It goes back to another thread here about "lowballers",..most here hate lowballers because they take their work,.. not because it's bad for the overall industry.
Jeff...many folks would consider me a lowballer, comparatively speaking, but thats life in Florida. There's so much competition in my area, we can't justify more than $350- 400 for the average roof, and usually much less than that. Have to make up for the loss of income on the upsell.

I hear ya' Ray,...you gotta worry about your own world and not what others may think about your methods or tactics. Getting on the property is SMART,..then you can show what you can do,..and turn a $200.00 roof job into an $800.00 day.
Dan,..If this happened to me,..I would be mad at myself more than the employee. You set yourself up for what happened. Don't be mad at him for trying to make a better life for himself. Probably 99% of the members here would do the same thing.
last yr was a learning experience. this yr will be one also but I have made some positive changes, one I got a contractors license, that way I can do other things besides roof cleaning if I need to( its amazing what customers will ask you to do if you do a good job cleaning a roof) two I will be asking my workers to sign a no compete contract. If they don't then they don't work for me. I also am dealing with low ballers in this area. I had no Idea that there was a guy going around selling roof cleaning jobs with a broom, and he is cheep. I did learn that if I show confidence and matter of fact when selling roof washing as the only and proper way. I have great results. I do not worry about my competition I will do my thing my way, the right way. People will see my work and the results and that is all I need.
WOW dude. The guy was with you for 15 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he has pretty much covered the (non-compete) I don't know the particulars but maybe he was hoping for something more from you? Partner?? make him a supervisor with a helper?? Hell you could have gotten the money he got for a box truck invested into your business. It sounds like a HUGE communication issue. IMHO
were freinds and i wish him well but theres only so many roofs and pepole willing to do it you guys know dam well most of the time you have to twist there arm to get it done.

if he's gonna charge $150 a roof , be happy with $500 a week, still lives with Dad, and no offense, but worked for somebody for 15 years without having gone out on his own 13 years ago, he'd probably be the last person I'd worry about competing against ... bill is right, non compete, always, though in this situation I really wouldn't spend much time worrying about it
At $150 a roof I'd subcontract to him. If you trained him & he does a good job, have him do your first few jobs of the week while you do all the others. You charge the customer full price, pay him $150 and pocket the rest. The price stays in the good range & everyone goes home happy. He owns his own business (even if he is still working for you).
