Customer mistaking GM for Acid Rain stain?

I had an estimate yesterday and the customer only wanted 1 small section of his roof cleaned where moss was starting to grow. He informed me that the front of his house wasn't stained with any type of algae or bacteria, rather it was stained by acid rain.

This is the first time a customer has insisted to me that it was acid rain that caused this and to me, it looked like light GM stains. There were heavier GM stains around the house.

I informed the customer that I felt that I could clean them because I was sure it was GM, but is there any possibility that he is correct? It was tough to dance around the issue with him, but he did end up asking for quotes to clean only the moss, as well as quotes if the entire roof was cleaned.

A quick search told me that acid rain could degrade a shingle, but it didn't appear that the shingle had granule loss to me. I wasn't able to walk the roof as it was very steep, so I was looking on from a ladder.

Phil, I got in the habit of doing test areas.  That way you will know if it will come clean and it makes the roof look bad, so they will have to clean it.

Good idea, Tom. I haven't purchased my first batch of SH for this year, yet, so I couldn't do that. That will be great for the future, though!

Grab some 6% and apply it straight. may take a couple of times but itll work. I can 100% promise its not acid rain.

Got the job, but he's only committing to removing a small section of moss. I informed him that I'd test the stains on the front of the roof while we are there. He said he'll clean the whole roof when they get back on their feet w/ money. Thanks for the info guys.

Well, his main concern was removing the moss on the back side of the roof before it gets worse. I gave him two quotes and other options, but he only wants that removed for now.. That's fine with me, and I understand since the moss can do a lot of damage if left untreated. The stains on the front of the house aren't that visible and his home backs to the woods, no one could tell anyway.

Well, definitely wasn't an acid rain stain, but it'll clean real nice when he is ready to do the entire roof. Cleaned up the moss and eliminated that problem, for now.
