New Toy Infared gun (Update # 1)

My son has one of these he uses at the track, would be curious if we can get some readings on the heavy stained roofs before and after temp readings to validate the increased AC usage from GCM. Any thoughts on this as a possible tool?

With an infrared heat gun, you can do something similar, but with your heating and cooling costs. Just wander around the inside and outside of your house on a hot summer day or a cold winter evening, and point and shoot at windows, doors, walls, roof, or anywhere that heat might be able to pass through the exterior of your house. Your infrared heat gun will quickly give you a detailed picture of where the winter heat is escaping to the outdoors, and where the summer heat is leaking in from outside

absolutely. you could clean a demo spot and show how it is viewed compared to the dirty roof with the cam.

@Kim - what a great alternative to the Thermal Imaging cameras that I've looked at (those were spendy, ala FLIR!).  That bugger that you referenced will come in handy around the house too, and probably pay for itself in no time.  I've read somewhere (can't recall the source, sorry) that a 10% difference in temperature due to heavy GC on shingles is common.  I'd have to believe that delta would be even higher with light colored shingles compared to those with severe stains.

Can you imagine, while on a sales call, taking a reference scan from a clean part of the roof, then another scan of heavy GC infestation, locking both readings to memory and 'matter of factly' sharing that information with the HO?  I'm going to buy one as soon as the warden gets over what I spent on Christmas  wink.gif    An imaging camera would be even better for those that have one, or were willing to spend that kind of dough.  (The visual image would likely resonate even better with a potential client, but at $1.5k - 8k, I think I'll pass for now  LOL.)

More gadgets for my arsenal.

@Dwayne - do tell good sir.  Whatcha thinkin'?

I have access to a thermal imaging camera that shows hot and cold spots. Might have to test it out this spring on a partialy cleaned roof. Good idea

Those probes work well. They are very consistent. I have had one for years. The only thing you need to know about them is that they are most accurate at about 6" away. They are intended for up close temperature measuring. They can be inaccurate if you are using them from 3 feet away.

Drat....  There goes my vision of standing in the HO's front yard with them while I beam a couple of readings off of their roof to close the deal...

Has it been effective at all as a sales tool for you Brian?  Thanks.

Ted,
I have to be honest. Believe it or not, I have never used it on a roof. I bought it for my automotive business to find hot spots in radiators and restrictions in coolant flow. I have always wanted to use it on a roof to find our exactly how much difference there is in surface temperature, but I have never gotten around to doing that. I guess I'll have to add that to the 1,000 other changes I am making in my business this year. It will go on the list of things that need to be done that I have not gotten around to wink

Ted the samples you have might be a good time to clean one and make a demo board.
I am going to use a few that I have and slap em on some osb put em in the sun and viola' we shall see. and it is going to be 76 tomorrow. good enough to run some initial tests. I am going to add some white shingle samples as well as black. Science can be fun sometimes. lol
Before anyone buys let me see what I get this weekend, unless you just want to go to Harbor Freight, ha! lol

Kim - you betcha I'm going to put those shingle samples that you sent me to work.  I still haven't decided how best to use them as a sales tool.  Still chewing on that.  Maybe a small piece or two actually in my sales portfolio?

They would be very good for the science experiment that you mention.  Presenting factual test data to the HO is almost as good as showing them actual readings from their own roof.

I'm anxious to see your test results.   Perhaps the delta will increase as the temperature outside increases?

Kim, you are just awesome, really! You tell Randy I said he is lucky to have a girl like you biggrin This is unbelievably powerful stuff, especially if you clean a section of roof, and can show any benefical differences.
