I did learn how to clean a roof properly, I learned to chose the right equipment that other wise I don't think I would of ever come across, I learned how important it is to water the vegetation, and protect the home owners property.
I have been in the Pressure Washing business for 12 years and I have made all my money washing houses, decks, natural wood, and cleaning concrete. I added roofs to my business a year ago, and keep in mind I had hundreds of existing customers to reach out and offer roof cleaning to, but very few were interested.
I'm personally really starting to think there is no future in roof cleaning, and if there is their won't be any money to be made, I think we lost the window of opportunity, we missed the hay day?
Why do you think AC got out of the business, I'm in Florida right now where this roof cleaning supposedly originated and I see nothing going on, their not even familiar with roof cleaning.
I think there is only a hand full of people here doing well, Scott, Marcus, Bill, Chris, ugly shingle, maybe Ed, lol and please don't feel left out if your doing well and i didn't mention you. but those that are doing well gives us hope.
I also know for a fact their is a bunch of want to be's here that claim they are doing well and I know their not.
but this is what we do so I guess we will keep pounding our head against the wall.
well it;s suppose to be 75 today here in Florida let me go see if anyone wants their roof cleaned today. lol very unlikely.
so that's my thought lol
perhaps you think i sound discouraged, yes I am, but I'm also being realistic.
for me I think I might have to regroup and go back to what I know make money, which for me it isn't cleaning roofs.
have a great day!
Oops I had to edit this. I just now realize what brought this thought on, yesterday I seen where people were talking about RCIA and Power Washing organizations.
I do think they need to group together, because I think Power washing has more pull than roof cleaning.

I hear ya Clyde. I think we expected the world to be as excited as we are about roof cleaning. Just as some folks have no shame of breeding mold on their siding, same holds true for roofs. Some people just don't care, out of sight, out of mind. I personally did make more this year than last. I picked up roof cleaning as an added service, not the only service. I will continue to press on and try to stand apart from my competitors for many of them will be working at Home Depot next year anyway. Clyde thank you for semi adding me to the list of folks who are allegedly doing well.

Ed I know your doing well, I like you, I didn't want you to know how well your doing. I wanted you to try harder lol.
Clyde; I really confused by your post. 3 days ago you were on here talkimg about trying to get painters involved in roof cleaning on a large scale. Now today you're here giving the impression that you are about ready to throw the towel in. Is your business in Florida that bad? Wow, you've been there what less than a month now and you expect to have a booming operation? Maybe you need to change your thinking on some topics. If something is not producing results, stop doing whatever it is and try something else. Have you ever caught a fly in a glass jar? If so, did you watch what it did? It kept flying into the sides of the jar, knocking its brains out trying to acheive freedom. Sadly it kept getting the same results. Still captive! If you watched long enough, it eventually died. That is exactly where you are right now! Only you have more intelligence than that fly, and can choose to make some changes. The fly thing really expresses the defination of insanity. ( repeatedly doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results). If you want changes in your business(and/or life), you have to be willing to make some changes in what and how you do things. Any industry as new as roof cleaning is going to require a lot of education on the consumers part. How you handle that part is going to be a major item in how well your business does. JMHO Gary

Ok Gary I will give it just one more day!
I told you Gary I was more confused than you.
and I also told you that I wasn't as wise as you, maybe with time.

Thank you for the compliment, but that is NOT whats important. What changes are YOU going to make to get your business and life back on track? Don't be like the fly. It won't work. Change is whats important.
Clyde...Unfortunately many of us have had times when we feel exactly the way you do right now. It is a tough time out there. Your right that roof cleaning demand is still growing and unfortunately customers are unaware of the proper methods or that there is a service available at all. That's something the RCIA is focused on long term to change. Regardless of this there will always be an ignorance factor in any industry. Consumers want results, but don't necessarily want to study to find the best solution. (Hence why so many people buy junk products or get scammed).
This is a tough economy with this overly cold weather creeping in early again on the east coast. But the Bacteria and algae are spreading and growing hardier on the east coast. You are all witness to that.
What I have learned here has been very valuable. Not just in roof cleaning but in service business skills. We actually focused on roofs before we cleaned this way and sold it for 75c a square for years. So here is a little inspiration for you. I received a call from a gentleman in KY the other day. He is cleaning his first 10 commercial roofs in 35F and is making money on them before Christmas. It is his first roof job ever. He was able to call RCIA guys for advice and found 3 competitors to consult with in his area. The market is out there, it's just hard to see sometimes. Especially in this market.
I wish you all happy holidays and meaningful reflections.

this forum isn't the answer to all life's questions.. it just tells you the ins and outs of roof cleaning.. it has been very helpful to me... i have yet to clean a roof for money.. i did do my old house that my ex brother in law lives in.. the roof was really nasty and had been for years.. using the methods taught on this board, i made that roof look like new..
here in the Houston area roofs take a beating and the algae is everywhere.. that is what keeps Scott and Marcus in business.. there is plenty of work.. they have found a way to market there services and make a living.. that is the key.. i don't know there marketing methods.. but the fact of the matter is that you have to get in front of the customer and educate them about roof cleaning..
i didn't even know you could clean a roof until i asked my father in law about his roof.. his house is 12 years old and the roof looks new.. i asked if he had it replaced after hurricane Ike.. he said no.. he just had it cleaned.. that's what caught my interest.. he had Texas roof clean do it. they use different methods but with the same results.. happy customer and great looking roof..
ultimately there is still money to be made here in the Houston area.. and the only way to get the work is to go get it.. don't get discouraged.. numbers show that if you knock on 100 doors that you might only get one sale.. who really likes rejection.. nobody.. but you have face rejection to succeed.. this is coming from the guy posting on the forum instead of handing out the business cards he just received this week..
as far as AC getting out of the business.... maybe he was tired of it.. maybe he wanted a change.. maybe more freedom... who really knows.. only AC.
also the people that are not interested in having there roof cleaned... who are they? are they lower income people or what? find people who are willing to pay top $$$ for quality work.. cheap people suck..

What I've learn here in this forum is INFORMATION IN HOW TO CLEAN A ROOF Properly! I'm not a huge company like you most are, I get by in two categories that expanded to.. 1.Drywall/Interior & Exterior Painting 2.Pressure Washing: Log Homes, Vinyl siding, Deck restoration. Now I'm adding Roof cleaning to my business for the reason there are houses that I have washed and they ask me if i pressure wash roof...I told them no... And don't have the correct equipment to clean there roof with. That being said I believe I can start up a addition to my business. I believe the hardest part about cleaning roofs are home owners have no knowledge . The home owner don't Know the lime fillers are destroying there shingle but yet can be saved in a softwash....ect....
I've done 4 roof this summer with a garden sprayer and made very little money doing it. But it kept me intrigue to learn all i can, so I found this forum and read read and read again... Bought me all-flo threw lori and all my acceries esc... I'm ready to rock and roll... AND I thank you all for that.....( For the info in this forum) Thumbs up!
The next step is promoting my name to my new addition! in this case I believe this is going to be the making it or breaking it point... This is the number one question most of you ask in this forum and try to achieve as a starter roof cleaner, Including myself.... *Got my knowledge to clean roofs *Got my equipment to clean roofs *Got my ads & Fliers out to the public ( giving the public information about me and why they should do a softwash. *But most importantly I did not convert all of my business into one pot, I can still really on my other businesses to keep me afloat Specially in these times of our economy.
Hang in there! Thanks for listening Steve

Clyde you should be proud. Your the only guy here that proved AC wrong. He said a national franchise just couldn't work. And here you are advertising from Jersey to Florida. Clyde please sign me up for one of your excursions.

well clyde, i just finished my second yr in the roof cleaning business, I started cleaning 6-1-09 -11-13-09 making around $21,000 part time. this yr I just finished my last roof closing the yr out at 3 times higher than last yr, again this was PART TIME.. I will have to say that I make more in the roof cleaning than the power washing.. My father was a pressure washer for over 20 yrs and had damn near every cracker barrel in illinois on a monthly bases. he did rather well but had to travel alot, which i did not understand but its what he loved.. now me on the other hand, i like to keep things simple, Yes i have a skid mount pressure washer, never even touched it last yr, this yr I have done a hand full of decks and some flat work, but i keep the 2 entites seperate , I dont want to confuse the Ignorant public when it comes to roof cleaning, Yes ,they dont know beans about roof cleaning. so as i educate the public I dont want them to even see anything than could pretain to power washing . When you confuse a person you lose to that person...
I learned that here on RCIA, keep your entities seperate... #1 rule if you ask me so clyde, YES , my roof cleaning business is very successful. and I feel will explode in 2011.. remember: Success is measured by the depths of ones own desires
your question was What have we learned from RCIA
Everything I know i learned here everything
Remember : You are what you think you are
negative thinking gets negative results

Quit whining Clyde and go get some work. Come to Houston, there's plenty here. The weathers awesome and we have great music. (Just kidding about you coming here. You probably will make a life changing decision and move here and complain that there's no work when everyone else is making money). No offense.
