i am cleaning my first roof today..  i have a 50 gallon tank.. i have bought 20 gallons of SH...  128oz of ISP 90%..  5lbs TSP.. and a box of BORAX... and a gallon of DAWN..  it is not a steep roof..

what mix do i need..   they say the SH here is weak..  and to mix 50/50 with water..  what about the other ingredients..  do i really need TSP and BORAX or even ISP..  i don't want to use things i don't need.... i am in the Houston area..  this is a test roof for a friend..  i am using a garden hose and a garden nozzle..  with a flojet 7.0 pump..  this will either be the beginning or the end of my career in roof cleaning.. PLEASE HELP!!

i plan on mixing

20 gallons of SH

64oz of ISP

5lbs of TSP

not sure how much dawn

20 gallons of water

like i said if i can do without the alcohol or TSP that would be great

i will have before and after pics later

Sounds like over kill to me. The SH/H2O and dawn should work fine. Trust the mix. 64 oz's of dawn should work, mix real good, put in after SH and H2O, use a peice of PVC tube to mix. Stick to the basic's.

My two cents.

You don't need the TSP unless the roof is really dirty and you don't need the ISP unless it is sorta cool. ISP will kill your mix quickly.

Kevin,

I'd do 50/50 mixture of SH and H2O to start out with (this recommendation was based off of Scott here's call on the SH being fairly weak here.)  I've been playing around the last few days and I found that starting with the basics then gradually adjusting my mixes worked best for me.  There's always time to play with and adjust the mixes, for now I'd worry about getting comfortable with the equipment and spraying etc. It's a great day here and I don't think there's any reason to put ISP in the mix today.

I didn't add dawn or anything to my trial runs and it worked fine, you just have to watch the run off really closely.

I too have searched and searched for the correct formulas and maybe a list of use this on that and this for this to no avail. But what I don't understand is why you would mix 50/50??? Then you are cutting the 12.5 down to 6.25 which is not much different then store bought clorox. I am new to all this but wouldn't running the SH stronger clean better and faster and by not having to retreat really bad areas cause you to use less SH in the long run???

Yes you are correct, but it also KILLS plants better and faster. Why is everybody always in a hurry?? This can be a VERY high paying carreer, so why get in a hurry?  Do you have 15-20 roofs to do today?  Probably not. 24-30% solution is plenty strong for the average roof clean. And the formulas are in the Premium section. May have to look back 10 or so pages, but they are in there.

Using 50/50 and stronger is simply wasteful and creates possible issues with vegetation. Having to retreat  the stubborn SPOTS doesn't warrant the use of super strong mix over the entire roof. So no,..you won't use less SH by going strong. Only about 10% of a roof typically needs resprayed,...so your really strong mix is just being wasted over 90% of the roof,.. just so you don't have to respray 10%. Got that!

Clorox is only 5.25% these days. Wal-Mart Great Value brand is 6% and a better value.

Tom, my first roof I experimented with just 15%SH at 2:1 (2 parts H2O to 1 part 15%SH) which equates to 5% SH on a slate roof.  Didn't make a dent, the black GM was still there and this was in 98 degree weather.  Then added dawn and first shot the black GM dissappeared and the heavy lichen whitened up meaning its dead.  The dawn acting as the surfactant allowed the SH to penetrate.  Just using SH or more of it doesn't do the trick alone. With better surfactants you can use less SH thus less plant killing salt (the chlorine evaporates quickly but the salt stays around and washes out to the plants).
