Some Toledo area roofing contractors have been informing homeowners that their roofs are in need of replacement because of the Black stains. We have been told this lately by several homeowners after we have cleaned there roofs. Many of these clients are older and are unaware of Toledo Roof Cleanings services. I can't believe that thses roofers would misinform Homeowners just to make a buck. Shame on them.
Scott, We have tried to get a story in our local paper for about a year and they won't print anything about the roof cleaning industry. Great idea though. We have Owens Corning Certified roofing Contractors putting folders on peoples doors telling them that the stains are a sign of the roof failing. It's really sad because some home owners have replaced 12 year old roofs because they were mis informed. I wonder if Owens Corning knows this is going on.
I alway refuse to sell fear and really have no respect for those that do, especially when it is downright untrue. Roofing and roof cleaning have always had their share of shady operators.
In Oregon, the Dept of Justice (state Attorney General) has a department of Consumer Affairs that will go after fraudulent businesses. If you know the names of the businesses, possibly you can directly report them to a similar agency in your state. Usually a practice doesn't have to being flat out illegal to get some action taken - deceptiveness usually will come under scrutiny also.
Good luck.

Can you reach out to the roofing contractors and have them sub out roof cleaning to you? I just started late summer and fall this year, but have 2 roofing contractors on my side and they are kicking me business for $40 a roof. I cleaned one that a contractor sent me and got 3 referrals from that roof. $40 to the contractor and the rest is mine.
I am going to pay for some advertising in the local papers in the spring and they are going to do an article being I am paying for advertising.
same thing in my area the other contractors tell them its the tar from the felt soaking threw the homeowner doesnt realize if the tar can saok threw so can the rain lol
ohio reguires all contractors to offer a min of a one year warranty on all work they do so that is all the offer them on new roofs that is why we seperate ourselves from them we offer 10 to 15 years on a new roof depending on what material they want so that just shows there about the money know and not in the long run

As the world turns. LOL People in my area think they need to replace also. I am going to do a big marketing and education program early next spring. Good luck.
These guys don't want to team up with us and make $40.00 dollars on referals. they want to scare homeowners into thinking in the winter their roof is going to start leaking. Like I said one of these guys is a Owens Corning certified roofer. His literature has it right in it that black stains are a sign that your roof needs replaced.
