I was just reading a sales book and it said that we should never just get numbers from a phone book and start dialing away. It mentioned that calls should not be made until a qualified list is put together.
Unfortunately, the book didn't go into HOW to put together a qualified list.
Do most of you gather a qualified (whatever that means) list first, or do you just call random numbers from the phone book?
I'm going to start cold calling a lot more, so I thought I would try to avoid some common mistakes. Any advice?

Roof Cleaning and Pressure Washing in Anne Arundel County, and Howard County, Maryland
You can purchase lists from marketing companies with targeted names, such as age, income ,location, owner or renter, etc. They are not cheap. The HOME phones in operation have dropped greatly and a lot of people no longer have them. All cellular.
From experience I'd definitely spend your money elsewhere. Like Gary said most people don't use home phones anymore and if they do more than likely they've registered on the National Registry Don't Call list. I know I personally HATE getting soliciting phone calls.
You could use a Cole directory. Which is a type of reverse directory where you can get phone numbers by location. There a bit spendy and if you ask me, I have to side with the rest of the guys.... I dont like phone solicitors!
Qualified is; specific targeted areas, age groups, home owners or renters, etc.. If you are going to buy calling data, make sure you are getting data that is targeted to areas you are servicing and that they are home owners. You can even get data that's specific to home owners that just purchased In the last 5 months, but the more specific the more it will cost per record. Make sure you check numbers against the DNC list even though the data supplier said it is DNC compliant. www.callingdata.com . I think cold calling is great for certain industries but for roof cleaning i think there is better ways to spend time and money marketing but it might work well.
