roof cleaning techniques

i have a question... i am looking at getting in to the roof cleaning business..  i have read posts on here and everyone seems to be using "love" or "apple cider"..  this is a low pressure spray technique..  i have seen others advertise low pressure cleaning with now harmful affects on plants.. and they basically stand on top of the roof and lower a hose attached to a spray nozzel with multiple sprayers.. like the ones used to clean a driveway.. the cheap ones you can buy at home depot or lowes..  what chemicals are these guys using..  this method is immediate..  my father in law had it done a while back and his roof is 11 years old and it looks brand new.. that is great for here in texas.. anyway any info would be great..

Sounds like you're talking about a surface cleaner or the pitch witch. I'm not even gonna explain to you,..other than these methods are are bad for the roof and not the way of doing roof cleaning. If you want to learn just begin reading and you will gain answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet.

Hi Kevin,

You've basically found a training/discussion forum for professional roof cleaners.  The roof cleaning techniques are chemical in nature and the mixes are constantly evolving as we advance the industry.  There's enough info in this place to fill an encyclopedia of roof cleaning.

Due to the dangers of roof walking and chemical cleaners we don't generally encourage home owners to try cleaning their own.  However if your insistent have a look at GAF.com or IKO.com  (shingle manufacturers) and search for shingle stain you'll find 1.) they don't approve of anyone using a pressure washer on their shingles and 2.) a general idea of how they should be cleaned.

how do i fix my signature... also it wasnt a high pressure wash the other guy used.. and there was no damage to plants and the algae was removed as the sprayer went down the roof.. i have seen pictures of this on the web..

i am looking to start this on weekends to supplement my job.. thanks for the quick responses and help..

It IS a pressure wash. It was Texas roof clean you were probably loooking at and the sprayer was a pitch witch. They do good work.

I know where pinehurst is. We do A LOT of business in Tomball.

Yes, they are using a pressure washer hooked up the that "roof washer". They DO NOTuse equipment recommended by shingle manufacturers. Their system still uses 300-500 psi to wash off the algae, which is also washing off the stones on the shingles.

Professionals on this forum don't use pressure washers ( or any other device) to clean roofs.

Kevin, if you use the seach button, on top of the page, you will find the answer to almost every question.

We do not kill any grass or plants because we water them down before, during and after a roof cleaning job.

ok thanks, i am just trying to find out as much info as i can.. i am new to this and i wasnt aware of this business until just recently when my father in law told me he had it done and his roof looks brand new.. my previous home had algae on the roof and looked horrible... i wish i would have know sooner... the company that did my father in laws house said his method was approved by the shingle manufacturer.. also he said it was safe on the environment and he washed it with a low pressure hose attachement he ran down the roof.. and they used no chlorine.. or anything that turned to salt.. and it has immediate results and a warranty... i am trying to get the name of the company...

Spend some time reading on this site before you ask too many questions, all your answers are here. 

Noone here uses any such devices.  I started out the same way you did a couple months back and have spent hours and hours reading the posts on this site.  95% of my questions were answered without having to ask any. 

Shingle manufactures void warranty if any pressure is used even low pressure.  I have spent a significant amount of time on the phone with several shingle manufactures and although they havent put their stamp of approval on the RCIA yet, they recommend a similar solution that we apply.
