Has anyone ever mixed Copper Sulfate in their Mix?  I use this in my pond for Algae control.  It's kind of expensive but may be a better way to help clean roofs.  Any thought/comments.

As a former catfish farmer, I've had a pretty good amount of exposure to copper sulfate.

First, the powdered stuff is down right dangerous. Inhaling it while mixing can lay you out on your rear.

Second, it will burn the heck out of some landscape, so that can present a risk.

I would worry about the copper's reactivity with some other metals and leaving a "patina" where one is not wanted.

You are introducing a heavy metal into the runoff and thus the soil. That in itself could be an EPA nightmare.

While it would certainly kill algae I don't know it a surface application would penetrate the shingles and provide any longer cleaning/prevention than a good old dose of SH.

I got the answer!!!!! First spray a light coat of glue all over the roof and then sprinkle the copper on top. Ya Ya that's the ticket.

Actually, and please do not laugh, we took some calcium hypochlorite stuffed into some nylons we sewed together, and hung it on the north side of  a roof under trees.

It worked great! Looked terrible though.

Copper Sulfite does not mix well with SH, it will turn you mix and tank brown and create foam and gas. We tried using it for yearly treatments but abandoned it as we still like to use some SH in our treatments.

If I was looking for long term treatment spraying that is cost effective I would look into using CH.
Where as CH won't kill as quickly as SH,...it will work long term,... and I believe is a better treatment spray than standard diluted roof mix. There are roofs that I cleaned 5-6 years ago with Ch when I was experimenting,... and they still look good.

There is a thread on here somewhere that Chris states this is because of CH not being real water soluble and therefore sticks to the roof longer.

I have used it to clean roofs,..just not practical,...hard to mix and is messy,...and leaves a white film on anything that isn't heavily rinsed. You can get CH up to at least 72% available chlorine,...just doesn't give the punch though of SH.
