Trouble cleaning two autumn brown colored roofs yesterday.

This is probably a serious newbie question, but does this color roof normally take more applications to clean than others?

I had to spray each roof 3 times yesterday, both were quite heavily stained in some areas, but nothing that I haven't encountered before. It seemed that the first application hardly even made a difference, on both roofs. I started to wonder if my SH supplier sold me some SH that had lost its potency.

I have not cleaned this color roof before, but I found it odd that I had to respray so many times.

At first guess, I'd have to wonder if your mix wasn't strong enough, which would add credence to your thought the SH was weak. I've never had brown take more applications that other colors. Do you have any pictures of the progression?

Also, how long did you wait between applications?

Agree 100% with Ray.  The pic below is after a 4-5 minute dwell time on the clean section.  This is from one of our jobs yesterday in Fairfax County VA.

Typically how long do you guys wait to re apply if needed? I have found waiting till the next day sometimes works well. plus it impresses the customer that you would show up again to double check your work.

30-45 minutes should be sufficient time, unless it is below 40*. Then maybe an hour. What would your customer think if you left the job and the roof was still dirty, even if you told them you were coming back tomorrow??  Not the way I want to do business. It also increases your cost for travel which effects your bottom line.

Well I say it was not the strength of your Sh that was the problem, I would go with patience. The warmer the weather the quicker the reaction, now as it is getting cooler it can take alot longer to work. You should always be checking your mix strength prior to application so that you do not run into any problems when you are already on the job. Apply the mix and wait....remember it's going to get even colder......just gotta slow down now. Also I don't return the next day, I make sure the job is done right the first time. Your wasting alot of time and fuel returning to finish a job that you can complete the first day.

The last thing I would want is to leave a home unfinished. I do go back to inspect and take pictures.

Heat records were being broken in the 'BaWa' /  VA&MD area yesterday - it was brutal for late September.  I was spent from the heat after only two roof cleaning jobs.  So I doubt if it was weather related.

The SH from my supplier has been noticeably weaker since the pool season closed down.

Well I have to still disagree about the weather. For atleast the last three weeks I have had to wait for results,on less humid days or just in the " seventies " is a big difference. I would usually see resuts in a few minutes this time of year can start to take at least 20 min. Now is he just talking about some tough spots or the entire roof.?How long did he wait between each application?

I'm not sure Patrick - Phil can chime in.  Since he's not too far from me, I just happened to know that it was in the mid 90s and humid as heck yesterday.  It was like any other summer's day roof cleaning around here.

It's all good my friend.

I hear you Ted,if it was that hot then my theory would be wrong.I just know up this way, this time of year I gotta take the cooler weather into consideration. There are alot of factors as we know that can cause him this problem. But by throwing our ideas back and forth maybe together his problem will be solved.

I did a white roof with a high pitch the other day It was cool and shady I used the love 60/40%. It sounds like I made several mistakes. One I mixed the solution before I got to the job site. I didn't allow enough time in between applications for the first shot to do the trick. I ended up shooting it 2 times that day and comming back the next day to touch up some spots. Yes it was expensive. I also believe that my spray was too course and ended running off the roof too quickly. It looked good when I finished and it will hopefully lead to a large commercial job in the next day or so.

I mix usually the night before and never have had a problem. If the pitch is steep I use the apple butter acordingly.I usually try to wait at least 20 mins before I respray anything twice, some stains are tuff and need a third. If nessacary taking in all the factors you mentioned, maybe make the mix stronger.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help! I think from now on I will be mixing the solution a little stronger. I am have a difficult time with my SH supplier here. Its expensive and some batches don't seem to do as well as others. I also can only get it in liquid form by the gallon. Currently Looking for a supplier or source that can do better. Any suggestions?

-Mike

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. We waited about 20-30 minutes between applications and even made the mix stronger, which didn't help much. It was pretty darn hot that day, so weather was not a factor. After reading this, I am convinced that the SH was weak as I haven't run into this issue in the past, even on a light colored roof. I was just kind of like, man, this stuff is not doing the job today! Oh well, I am switching suppliers next time since I am tired of opening and discarding 30 + 1 gallon jugs of bleach every weekend haha.

I do believe we just discovered your problem!

Are you using regular store bought bleach and adding water to it to make your mix?

Phil, I fixed your signature, so your link works now. Sounds like you are getting a raw deal on chem. There will be some new answers for suppliers of bulk Chlorine after the show, but for now I sent you a pm that should help.
