Door to Door: Are you doing it wrong?

I've been in door to door sales for about four years and I'm pretty good at what I do.  Lining up work for roof cleaning should be a piece of cake for me, but my success is spotty compared to what some members claim they can do in one day.

So, I thought I'd give everyone a chance to talk about how they approach a customer and how much business they can generate in one day.

I can usually get one good solid lead per hour which I schedule for a free demo/spot cleaning later that week.  Then, I come back with a written estimate and a pitch ot both spouses.  I can close on maybe one of four leads.  So in other words I get one job per four hours of door knocking.

Does this seem high or low to you?  Please respond.

1 job per 4 hours sounds like you'll alternate your days knocking and spraying. Its a tough time of year. I guess its better than sitting home. I've gotten calls this year from flyers I put out last year.

Great question,

This business is not as strong as I thought is was going to be here up north. The public really needs to be educated about roof cleaning as an option for them. If you can set up 2 jobs/day, spraying 3 out of 7 days, that is 8 jobs performed per week. Not bad at all, consider that a win.

Education is the key!

Even here in Florida I'd guess that 80-ish out of 100 homeowners have either never heard of roof cleaning, or at the very least never seen it done.

So they have no frame of reference for it. No idea of the cost, reasons they need it, etc.

Add in the door to door guy with a pump sprayer and a PW doing roofs for $50.00 bucks and they are completely confused when your bid is $500.00!

Door to Door isn't a bad idea...

Seeing is believing... We have to find a way to get more people to see it at once.

I have an idea!

Let's do a RCIA tv commercial that plays on local cable channels.
Do it like a Public Service Announcement. No Sales!
But give out a website addy to a page that has a directory of any RCIA Certified Roof Cleaner who participates in the program.

Just a thought.

I think that sometimes door to door is a better return than mailers.  The people that I approach explain to me  that they have read about roof cleaning in the mailers but throw them out because they think that it is a gimmick. I just try to educate them on the services that I can provide for them and what it would it would cost to do this.I try to keep it simple and leave them with a card that explains more in detail about what the algae actually is, why it's there, etc. The  (non pressure) friendly approach seems to go a long way with people. Meeting people one on one works well for me.

I like the idea of a TV commercial however this may create a flurry of new competitors or avenue for serious competitors to copy or steal trade secretes. I believe we would fair better continuing to approach customers one on one in a FYI mode with out hard selling. In other ventures I've done it all radio, TV, newspapers, magazines ect..Most produce a very low R.O.I. The most effective way I have found is to prequalify your client. Then give them information that may lead to a sale, at some point, with out pressure. We don't apply pressure to roofs why consider doing it to customers who aren't interested or just can't afford it!

Simplicity is the key to door-door sales. We usually go out for about 3 hours, sell 2-3 jobs and wright 10 qualified leads. The jobs we sold are the demos for the ones we qualified. we always target the highest end neighborhoods, such as golf courses. I go out on Saturdays a couple times a month.

I have two of them in the bag now. Just need to produce and get a fund together. We can do a viral video and post it on youtube for free and spam it all over the net.

Bill if I was to walk a high end neighborhoods around here the police would be called immediately. They do not like strangers around their homes.

I ordered some embroidered shirts from logoup.com.  They just came in and now I'm gonna hit the rich neighborhoods.  All I really need is one good job on a large home per week and I'm fine with that.

The commercial thing is a good idea and I would pitch in some cash for that.
