How to mark out gallon increments on a 55 gallon drum

I find having these marks to be very helpful. Here's a way to put them on, only takes a few minutes. Hope it's useful to someone.

The tank pictured is 34 inches tall. I wanted to mark out 5, 10, 15...  Divide 55 by 5, you got 11. Divide 34 inches by 11, you got 3.09 inches per five gallons. For our purposes that is close enough to 3 inches. (If your tank is taller or shorter, you can just cut the card to the exact size.)

  • I used a 3x5 index card, could also just measure and cut a piece of cereal box to 3". That gives us the 5 gallon marks.
  • To make the single gallon marks, slap a ruler on the card at an angle so that you have five inches measured out, mark them. Then take the ruler parallel and extend those marks to the side.

  • Snip out slots about as thick as your permanent marker with each line about centered. I used scissors, you could use a hole punch if you have one laying around.

  • Then tape either side of the slots to make them stay put. There's your custom ruled gallon ruler stencil.

  • Just start at the bottom and mark the sucker out. I centered the card in the middle of each 5 gallon mark to compensate for the thickness of the line. Of course this isn't ultra precise, don't use it to meter out the wine you pulled up from that 1789 ship wreck.

Very nicely done.  I tried something similar with a 275 gallon tote tank but I had to make sure that everything was level and then add one gallon of water at a time, marking off every 5th gallon.  Took forever, but it worked.
