Starting out on a shoe string budget ....

Hey guys starting out on a shoe string budget and wondered if using a backpacker sprayer on real dirty roofs would work? I'm planning to set up a rig this month, but have some clients that want the service yesterday.

I tried a small sprayer and stopped using it after 5 minutes. Way to slow. Not sure how a bigger unit will work.

I also believe that you have to be careful of your mix if it is under pressure. As the pros keep saying: Read the answers are here.

It'll work, but it will take a lot longer.

The 1st roof we cleaned was done with 4-1 gallon pump up sprayers raised and lower with a rope for refilling. The roof cam eout great, but it took about 3hrs.I can do that roof now in 45 minutes.

It'll work, but slow as molasses.  Pluss, anybody who's had a backpack sprayer leak  on them ( such as me) will promise you thats not the way to go.  Honestly for the cost involved, just get regular pump-up sprayers, not the back-pack kind.

It certainly would not look very professional and would limit the size homes you could do.
I would hope you would be legal and insured. If you can't afford the equipment maybe you should wait.

Don't put our reccomended solution in a back pack sprayer it could explode.  It's a big NO NO

Back pack sprayers are a good back up, but they leak and it burns as it runs down your backside....

If you can't afford 2-3 hundred for a 2gpm Delevan/cheap hose/small tank, then you won't be able to afford to set up a legal business...business registration, license, insurance, etc. I would save at least $500-1000 so you can get a decent setup. It adds up quick so be prepared.

I see from your profile that you're already a business owner - excellent.  There was a guy from somewhere in the Richmond VA area selling his gear via a post in the last day or so. Bruce (MaineMan) bought his pumps, but the balance of his gear might be available?

Wouldn't be too far of a drive from your neck of the woods.

Welcome to the forum.

I actually had that happen doing a house one day and ended up having to hose myself down. It was quite a shock smile Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for the warning. I actually called one of the other contractors and he told me the same thing. I believe he suggested a 50/50 mix of SH and H20 only. No detergents.

Amen to that brother. I did my second job today and hauling that backpack up a ladder wasn't a whole lot of fun. Got it done though and because it took so long I ended up drawing a crowd which landed a couple more jobs. Now if I can just figure out how to put back on the 5 pounds I lost today being 100 degrees, I'll be fine!

That may be true but back then they did not have cheap 12 v pumps.

Yeah get a cheap pump and some hose. After trying to do a couple with a sprayer you will be hating life. Just use SH and water with some lauramine oxide if you do it with a pump up. If you add Dawn, ISP or TSP it could explode from the gasses that build up. Last time I used a backpack sprayer it was supposed to be rated for the sealer we were using it end up all over our backs and butts when they failed on day 2.

Hope this helps
