Thinking 'bout taking out my first YP ad this year. Any suggestions, ideas on what works and what doesn't? I hate to advertise there, but as a new company, I need some exposure.

Yellow pages is a dying book. How many people you know that don't have a home phone anymore? Same is true for business's. Cell phones are about 1/3 the cost of a business line. Look how the yellow page directory has shrunk over the last 3 years. Very few peolle use it anymore. Also very expensive. jmho
I know that Tallahassee's top guy (Tim Asselton) carries a very large ad, and has done so for years. The book does have a lot of smaller ones too, so many in fact that you tend to get lost when looking at them. I think ist either go big or don't do it it all, but I do need something for name recognition.
I have had the comment a couple of times from people mentioning they have not seen me in the book, and at least one person went with a company who he felt had more " longevity", even though I've washed for at least 5 years longer that that guy.
I hate to do it....but feel I need to.
O wonder if it would be smart to do a display ad for a year or two, then scale back to a one line ad.

Better off with YP online directory. Though they arent that great either you have a much better shot at getting some work. Isnt it funny how a YP salesmen will tell you how great and relevant their book still is?
I ran an ad this year even though I knew alot of people said don't waste the money. When the book first came out, I received quite a few calls but after two months I didn't receive anymore from the yellow pages.
The one saving grace for me was that the first call I received from the yellow pages ad, paid for my ad for the year so the rest was gravy.

I feel its a waste of capital, but I also feel that I've got to do something to help me establish more of an institutional presence for a couple of years. Here's what my rep has designed for me. Would love your comments.
An I'm not just focuing on Roof cleaning on this ad...I just don't think tallahassee is large enough for me to specialize in just that field at this point.
BTW...did tell my rep i wanted the certified RCIA logo in there too!

I did a 1/4 page add a few years ago that definitely did not pay for itself - probably did not even recoup 30% of the cost. Last year I started doing just the on-line directory and got just as many calls. Most of my calls come from general internet leads though. I'm wondering when the book will be a thing of the past.

Ask your Rep for a GUARANTEE, (it guarantees a certain number of calls) I know that the Yellow Book in our area will offer customers one. Also, with all the white in your Ad, what’s on the page behind you? These books are printed in a wash-out fashion were you can almost see right threw the page. Your Rep should have mentioned that if you purchase an Ad that you will be added to the online listings for free, be sure they list your website, will help your SEO.
I know lots of companies that are not renewing their ads in these books due to the economy, so its more or less weather you can afford it or not. And if older people are the only ones still using these books, I like their money just as well as the other generations. Just my thawts…
