Does algae really damage roof shingles? When I talk to customers I want to make sure I am telling them the truth.
Algae & mold will absolutely damage shingles. These fungus thrive on shingle roofs because they feed off of the additives in fiberglass shingles. Theses fungus can drastically shorten shingle life if not properly maintained. These are inportant things that home owners should be made aware of. Hope this helps.
The Answer to that is YES! You should really do allot of reading here and on the internet and educate yourself and find out what you’re getting into. There are 4 stages that happens before the roof needs to be replaced do to Algae. You should know what they are before you try and talk to a HO about cleaning their roof.

You are so right. Found a great article on it on this web site. I have been talking to customers about the looks and what cleaning can do for them, but did not have the technical info to talk about roof damage from the algae.

Yes. In many ways.
Granule loss, Rotting of shingles, disrupting the normal fungal ecology of the surface which in turn disrupts it temperature rate and schedule of itself and surrounding materials and the obvious propinquity to moisture and such objects(yes I have been waiting a long time to use that word. It means relation to.), Algae, moss, fungal and bacteria growth on roofs are also the main culprit for shingle loss during a wind storm via loss of adhesion from shingle to shingle or the "curling effect", and the fact that once one is on the roof the others aren't so far behind and the roof will be in bad shape before you know it.
And according to the Irish National Science Foundation they are also the leading cause of bad luck, which can be troublesome for the home owner. Obviously raising us from plain ol' roof cleaners to Lepperchaun status and our Tanks are the pot'o'gold at the end of the rainbow.

Scott,
I left my drive power cable at your house. Can you post the pix of the shingles damaged by algae cause I cant right now......
Thanks,
AC
here are a few
I have pix of a 25 to 30 year old 3 tab shingle roof that the shingles are swollen cracked and narled. Where the plumbing vents are and the flashing kept it clean the 30 year old roof looks like the day it was instaled. Ill try to post the pix once I get my hard drive power cord back from TEXAS.

Hiya, I gotta ask but are those pics that AC posted supposed to represent before and after shots, or, are they pics of how algae can cause the shingles to curl up like that. Reason I ask is that I was unaware that curling was due to a algae infestation, in fact i remember many years ago hearing that Owens Corning was in the hot seat for their New fiberglass shingles that were guaranteed for twenty years but displayed the "curling" in as few as five years and the problem lied in the manufacturing process. If in fact it is due to the algae, then that opens many new doors of potential customers. Needless to say I hope it is and off I go to do some more reading..

I didnt post the pix yet???? I will now though:)
See where the zinc flashing killed the algae and the roof stayed clean???? This is a 30+ year old roof. Where it stayed clean it looks like new! Look up against the house where its clean from the zinc! Proof Positive!
