I,m new to the roof cleaning business. My partner has 15 years cleaning experience. He has a lot of cleaner training but we are still not sure what type of cleaner works the best on asphalt shingle roofs. From what I can see on here their is a lot of different opinions on cleaners. What is the safest for the flowers and shrubs but still cleans well.

Ray I'm new to the roof cleaning industry to . I will tell you that I've been reading for three weeks and have learned alot. Talked to lori at pwp and she is the BOMB!! Call her and she will help.
I have also learned that alot of the people use diffrent things in diffrent areas. Maybe its the type of atmosphere . many think their way is best but I think you just have to stick with what you think works the best for you and tweek it.
I have heard if you are a newbie stay away from TSP.
Ray, we all use a chlorine based solution that is applied with an environmentally friendly process. This can all be learned here on the forum. We do not re post the recipe over and over and that is why these guys are telling you to search. This is a free learning message board, welcome and enjoy your stay.

Could you explain more on the TSP. Thanks
Many guys here use tsp to boost the ph of the mix, giving it a cleaner and a faster shock. TSP etches things, and is generally used as a painters cleaner in prep for paint over old painted surfaces to break the finish. TSP along with borax in the mix can cause a borax trapped film from the tsp etching and therefore create a longer lasting roof cleaning. The cons: Windows will get etched if tsp drys on them More salt content when roof gets rinsed flooding into gardens TSP is marked by the epa as a harmfull chemical that causes algae blooms in local waterways and drowns out fish It will cause your Sodium Hypochlorite to break down faster It's expensive The pro's Is a good cleaner, removing more film from a roof than dawn can Boosts ph making a faster working mix Can trap borax

Mr. Booze this was a great post. No one ever put it to me that way. I had a few bad experiences with TSP in the beginning but I learned how to tame the beast. My best friend became lawn sprinklers when it comes to decks, painted surfaces, and blacktop.
It can't be said too many times, "read, read, and read". I'm new, too and have learned this from many others like Chris at Arkansas Roof Renew. He has been at this for a while, and he reads this forum every morning... like it was the Arkansas Democrat/Gazette or something. His only complaint, "The sports section on the forum is lacking... never anything here on the Yankees or the Razorbacks!"
Thanks for all the replies on cleaners. I'm just trying to find the best product for the money. I want to give my customers the best product I can without killing the fish in the fish pond if I was to have a little splatter.

She is a distributor, that sells roof cleaning equipment.
Ray, fish ponds should be protected with tarps if possible and the runoof that could reach them should be collected, or diverted. If runoff will reach a pond from rainshed, rinse the panel in question while diverting the rinse runoff. Remeber to dilute the area were this rinse runoff will collect to avoid killing plant life.
Just used the combo applesauce/apple cider today and left out the TSP. Still worked great! Customer liked the job so much she ask me to do the house, deck, and guest cottage.
