Here is a video I made while I was cleaning a roof the other day. I read a thread about run off, So I thought I would try out what I learned and make a movie. Now before you criticize the quality of the video, remember, I am on a ladder with a Respirator on, safety goggles that are fogged up because I am sweating, Plastic rain pants on so I don’t burn my legs because I am on a ladder.
 Now, did I forget anything?
Oh yeah, I love my job.roof cleaning

I really liked the video. I think info like that is priceless. I am the type of learner I can read 1000 hrs but seeing something done I can learn instantly. Thanks again

Actually the quality is suprisingly good. Nice video.

My only question is, why from the gutter? You could have actually done that roof with little to NO run off standing on the roof and spraying from the bottom up...

Im not saying theres a right or wrong way, just curious as to why you chose to do it that way...

Scott, I would have needed a 40’ ladder to get to the top of the roof from the side of the house. I only have a 24’ It is hard to see in the video, the house has a cape cod style roof with about a 10/12 pitch. Your not walking that. Thank you for your input. As always I appreciate and learn from all input here.

Good luck with the video Dejay, I used a flip cam, about the size of a cell phone.

I have always done roofs from the top down. A washer friend sugested to go from bottom up. I didnt like the idea but we tried it. Big no no. Way too much love in the downspouts. Good video. Was that water you sprayed next?

Glen, what size nozzle are you using? It seems to be taking way longer than it should. And what are you using as a surfactant?

     Good video.

Glen.  Great video considering you are recording it with all that  gear (mask, suit, gloves) and while spraying the roof.  Did you wash both sides or just the one side?  How did it come out?  Seeing the end result would have been a great way to end the clip...

Ahh, see, it didnt look that steep on the video. That can be walked if need be, but if theres no reason to then why. I prefer to shoot from the bottom up in all situations.

From the bottom up or the top down it is all about how you can control that runoff. Way to take my posts and put it into practice Glen!! Not every roof is done the same here. Sometimes we use the ladder edge, sometimes we get up top.
We usually go from the top down as the video by Glen shows.
Sometimes we spray just the gutter line 2-3ft up with a light enough spray to not have many drips, then bring it down from the top and meet that line. Then we lightly re-coat the whole thing. This was taught to me by Chris Tuckers Son.

There are many ways to control runoff and as an owner operator you can get there with practice.
Having employees changes the way this works.
I am starting to be sold on providing employees with less flow and weaker mix to decrease their chances of accidents and extreme runoff. That is why electric pumps are still great for roof cleaning even though they have issues air does not, Air has issue electric does not also.
Troubleshooting an air system is much more complicated than just changing out a throw away electric pump. The electric pumps can be manufactured to produce much less gpm making it safer for employees and reducing your chance of having to deal with a heavy sprayer on your team.

Bob, Thank you for another great post. I really like the spray up two or three feet. Then spray from the top down to meet it.
