Many roof cleaners also offer professional gutter cleaning as a great add on to a roof cleaning business. Many times a gutter cleaning call leads to a full roof cleaning business opportunity. Here is a cool looking gutter sucker.

For a roof cleaning business, gutter debris and leaf removal is a natural add on. We advertise the cleaning of gutters as a stand alone. Many times we wind up cleaning the roof as well! There are a lot more videos out there about gutter cleaning machines, even some make your own stuff. Mike Sullivan posted a great video about the gutter cleaning machine from hell. It even bagged for you. The more related things you can add to your roof cleaning business the better your chances of survival in this messed up economy.
Here is some home made gutter cleaning thing you can make for cheap that uses a leaf blower. I think a vacuum would be more professional for adding gutter cleaning to a roof cleaning business. Many customers don't want gutter debris all over their screen rooms and yards.

Here is the story about how and why I invented this gutter cleaning tool...
During the winter of 2008, I fell off a ladder and managed to dis-locate my knee. It was the second time in my lifetime that I have done this and frankly it is extremely painful. To my surprise, I soon learned that I was not alone.
According to Medical News Today, "nonfatal ladder injuries treated in emergency rooms jumped by 50 percent between 1990 and 2005". Falls from ladders can result in serious injury and affect people of all ages. Hurting my knee was likely much less serious than the injuries people got that caused a hospital visit. Ouch !! Broken Bones !!
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Over 500,000 Americansare treated every year from injuries from ladders. As I have lived through the same injury more than once, I didn't even go to the hospital or doctor which was probably a mistake. So imagine how many others are out there like me, who get hurt from a ladder, and never visit a doctor. Basically 500,000 injuries a year is probably far less than the number of ladder accidents that REALLY happen each and every year in the United States.
When you dis-locate your knee (and go to the emergency room or a doctor), you are bed ridden for about 4 days & then you hobble around for the next 3 weeks. You cringe with every step because your knee is weak and tender and usually swollen to the size of a watermelon. You wear a brace that locks your whole leg in place as straight as a board so that showering and sitting on the toilet become apain in the butt (literally)! You get to wrap a big plastic garbage bag around your leg for showers. To go to the bathroom, you fall backwards on to the seat keeping your leg perfectly straight all while hoping not to hurt yourself as you fall backwards.
You don't exercise, play sports or do anything athletic or strenuous. Basically you cringe every time you walk hoping that your knee is strong enough to support your body weight.
It really stinks (I am being polite here). So after limping around for several months, I vowed to stay off ladders as much as possible for the rest of my life.
Then this spring, the chore of cleaning the gutters of my house came as it does every year. The gutters on my house are25 feet off the ground on the front and 30 feet off the ground in the rear and usuallyREQUIRE a ladder to clean them properly.
The roof is steep and made from slate so you can't walk on it. Gutter Cleaning is also a job that usually takes several hours as moving a tall ladder that weighs close to 50 pounds around the house 5 or 6 feet at a time takes either all day or all weekend.
I have always carried my leaf blower up the ladder with me which adds that additional risk of injury from a fall. A leaf blower gets everything out of a gutter and doesn't get you wet or dirty. It is better than using your hands with gloves and better than using a hose. It gets EVERYTHING and really is the best tool for the job.
Well after my injury from just 3 months earlier and my promise to myself to stay off ladders, I was left with only two choices. Hire a gutter cleaning service or find a tool that allowed me to clean gutters without a ladder.
I searched the internet for a couple of weeks and found a couple of tools but NONE of them went higher than about 13 feet off the ground. My gutters are 25 to 30 feet off the ground!
Try searching for "gutter cleaning tool" in Google. Let me briefly explain the details of the results you will find to save you the trouble:
You will find agutter cleaning robot which still require a ladder to put them in the gutter. They are expensive and can easily get stuck or have a mechanical problem. When they get stuck, you must figure out where they are stuck and head up the ladder to free it and send it on its way to get stuck again! also these devices have a rechargeable battery which means if there is water in your gutters, the chance of electrical shock or failure is present.
You will findgutter cleaning tongs that act like hands. Problem here is they just grab leaves and sticks, not asphalt grit, seeds, needles & they can't take care of standing water. Also like other tools, they don't work past 13 - 15 feet gutters.
You will findgutter cleaningvacuum attachment. Once again, they aren't for two story homes & if your gutters are clogged with wet leaves and water, they get clogged VERY easily and can burn out the motor of your shop vac. Cleaning out the tube clogs can add an extra 2 - 3 hours to the job. Our tool works with shop vacs as well but we suggest using this method after all the big stuff is out and there isn't any standing water what so ever.
You will find agutter cleaning hose attachment. These are great if you don't mind getting soaking wet & they don't extend very high. They aren't long enough to get you away from all the now wet debris that is falling on top of you as you walk around your home. As you can see the water also just shoots straight down and doesn't force debris in one direction or the other the way a leaf blower does.
& yes... You will find gutter guards, helmets, screens and other gutter covering products. The cheap ones still let in everything except BIG leaves. Others can costTHOUSANDS of dollars for your home and still collect the small stuff likeshingle grit, seeds, needles, silt andsmall parts of branches. So you will still have to have them cleaned every couple of years. The gutter cleaning service will also charge youmore as they have to remove the covers before cleaning them and then re-install them.
any way back to my story...
I called a gutter cleaning service and got an estimate of $300. I was blown away. I am not sure if I have mentioned it yet here, but I amCHEAP and there is no way I am going to pay $300 every year to have my gutters cleaned. After 10 years that is $3000 dollars not including inflation.
So I put on my thinking cap and after many different experiments and $200 in various parts that did not work or help, I invented a tool that does the job perfectly every single time. & now it is Patent Pending !! My tool works with every leaf blower on the market and not just my Toro electric model.
Here is the BEST part: allthe partscostme less than $20 &
I can buy them all at Home Depot or Lowes.
If any parts ever get broken, I can replace them easily!
The gutters in the video on this page arecompletely filled with leaves andstanding water. When our tool is put together properly as I show in our 5 minute "How To" video series that you get with your purchase, it will clean gutters filled with water, leaves, debris, sticks, silt & more...
.....and yes it takes just 5 minutes to put it together
& comes apart easily in under 2 minutes for compact storage in a basement or garage or for transporting in your car to my parents house
The tool has the potential to save youthousands of dollars over the coming years! We are so confident it will work for you and your leaf blower, we have begun the process of having it patented. We will also give you a30 Day Money Back Guarantee if our tool won't work with your existing leaf blower.
If you don't own a leaf blower, you can buy a leaf blower, our instructions and videos and all the parts for less than $100 and that could be all you need for the next 20 years!
We have tested the gutter cleaning tool on dozens of leaf blower models both new and old. We have successfully used the tool on gutters between 10 feet and 30 feet off the ground. That's right 30 feet.
The least expensive versions of the tool work best with cheap electric blowers that cost less than $60 such as my Toro.... but the tool will still work well with gas models, rechargeable models and big gas backpack blowers.... and with just about any sized shop vac system out there!
Most (if not all) gutter cleaning tools on the market today, just work if your gutters are 10 to 15 feet off the ground. The gutters on my home are 30 feet off the ground and this tool works like a charm! Imagine if a homeowner owned a shop vac tool and have 25 foot gutters filled with water. I would bet that if the 25 foot tube filled with water on the way down, it would instantly weigh about 20 to 30 pounds and you would be forced to drop it and potentially damage your gutters or get injured. Leaf blowers really do work the best at ANY height.
If you are a homeowner like myself think about it for a moment... you will never pay a gutter cleaning service or handy man for gutter cleaning again!. Depending on your home, you could save anywhere between $100 to $1000 every year!
My neighbor was just quoted $250 last fall for a small two story home! Yes that is each and every year. That's $2500 over the next 10 years! and that doesn't event come close to the cost for a top of the line gutter guard or covering system!
Our gutter cleaning tool works with all types of uncovered gutters including aluminum, copper, vinyl & seamless gutters.
... According to Bob Vila, a well known home improvement guruand TRUE expert in the field....
"No matter what type of gutter system you have, it must be kept clear to do its job."
He continues...."There are all kinds of screens, grilles, louvres, and caps that claim to do the trick.
These gizmos may keep the leaves out, but small particles, like silt and the surface granules from roof shingles, slip through, creating a heavy sludge that clogs spouts.
So don't think installing one of these systems relieves you of your twice-a-year responsibility to clean out your gutters."
(excerpted from Bob Vila's American Home on Homearts.com)
If you think like I do, your home is an asset and protecting it is a priority. Homeowners who neglect the responsibility of cleaning gutters at least twice a year face the following issues which could cause thousands of dollars of repair bills:
Water leaks through spike and bracket holes and rots facia boards
Water gets into attic and causes mold and mildew
Overflowing waters causes flooding in your basement
Heavy gutters from clogging and water fall off your house
Mosquitoes breed in gutter and carry disease such as West Nile Virus
Of all of these issues, the potentially most damaging areFoundation Problems- Continued water leakage down the side of your home into your foundation will create cracks in the walls and leaks as well. In climates where the ground freezes and then expands constantly the problem can be even worse.
Once water leaks into your basement, you could have expensive mold and mildew problems... & you run the risk of ruining storage or worse yet, your finished basement.
In the event one of these problems does occur, do you think your homeowners insurance will cover the repair? Here are some surprising answers....
Water seeps from the ground into your basement, damaging your foundation and interior. Are you covered? No. Seepage is considered a maintenance problem, not "sudden and accidental" damage, and is excluded from home insurance coverage. Source: Property & Casualty Insurers Association of America
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage caused by gutter or downspout failure? Answer: No. Because it was a failure on your part to maintain the home. They are more likely to cover water damage caused by weather conditions beyond your control. Source: Wiki Answers

Hmmmmm! I saw a company cleaning gutters with sections of downspout with 2 elbows taped to the end to form a u. They would place the elbow end over the gutter and then using a back pack blower, blow into the end of the section of downspout. For taller gutters they would add on another section of downspout. I can see this working rather well if the customer was on a maintenance program and had their gutters cleaned twice a year. But for the one time cleaning or the gutters that have trees growing in them, not so well.
Just under 2 1/4" high and 3 1/4" wide, Looj propels itself through your gutters, under gutter straps and over downspout holes.
Using a three-stage auger, Looj breaks up clogs, lifts out the debris and brushes your gutters clean.
Spinning at 500 RPM, the high velocity auger delivers the power needed to dislodge, lift and toss wet leaves, pine needles and other debris out of your gutters.
Looj cleans a 60-foot section of gutter in just 10 minutes!
Designed for use in wet gutters, Looj is waterproof in up to 1 foot of water. Cleanup is fast and easy; simply hose the robot off.
The detachable handle is also a wireless remote control.
Looj moves in both forward and backward directions. You control the direction of the robot and the auger, so debris is propelled out of the gutter and away from your home.
