In my state contractors are required to get a license if you perform repairs on a home above the cost of $3,000. There are many other rules and regs for which companies/persons have to be licensed also.
We have been licensed and any legit contractor in any field should be. We also are RCIA Certified ofcourse.
This is a newer thing in PA.
Do all of you guys have to get a license?

Oh yes, here in Tampa Florida, only an occupational license is required. I think this is going to become a popular new forum. There is much more to running a Roof Cleaning Business then just spraying Apple Cider with a groundman.

I think that this is long overdue. Many guys starting up in this business have no idea about licenses, how and where to get the proper insurance coverage, good bookkeeping, which accounting software may be best suited, and on and on.

I have a question to get the ball rolling. What are the pros and cons of an LLC compared to a DBA? Advantages/disadvantages of each? Sole proprietor?

Is a contractor's license required in your state?

What's a good amount of liability coverage to carry?

How many have worker's compensation on employees?

Have any of you had a hard time collecting payment?

Have you had to sue to collect?

Have you been sued for damages?

I could go on for a long time here. I just really would like to see this section fire up. It could be very rewarding to have some discussion from the most experienced of members as well as questions from newbies. Anyone with an MBA would be welcome as well.

With all the roofers I have seen in the last two months working, half are crews put together on the fly, and the other half legit, no license is required around here to work on roofs.

Heck some don't carry insurance, and the last crew I saw no name on the trucks, 12 pack of beer with lunch at noon, but hey the homeowner got a great deal confuse

Here you have to have a license for the state $75.00 for contractors. But the kicker is you have to have a license for some of the cities you work in. They charge what they wont. in Rehoboth Beach I pay $135.00 a year. I have an LLC to protect my self from being sued, that way if I am, they can only get what my insurance is, not my personal things like my home. I carry $2M. liability insurance. I have not done any roof cleaning yet but in PW and deck restoration I set the appointment and get 50% of the bill before I start. I have had bad check and had to track people down for payment. This way I get something and if the check is bad, the work doesn't get done. In my state if you have one employee you have to have worker's compensation on employee. You can also have it for your self. Great topic Chris
