Just wondering if any of you guys use chicken ladder or a harness when on a roof? When I worked for dish network getting on roofs was a no no w/o a harness, problem was that harness was held to an anchor that had to be lagged into the studs on the roof.

we tie off to large trees, sturdy post of a deck, not the railings, porches, and when there is nothing in sight we use 100 gallon water tank. water tanks are great because you just fill them with water then pull plug when done. You need to be creative when it comes to using anchors. I use anchors that I wouldn't mention here on this forum.
Harness. Look for alternative ways to secure yourself other than an anchor. They're out there, trust me.
I know I'm not the only guy who has tied off his truck before. My pick up has rungs on the front and if the driveway is positioned correctly it works awesome.
Just throw the old constrictor knot with a mid shipmans hitch and you got yourself some safety! Lol.

I also don't use the harness in a box anymore from HD or Lowes. I switched to rock climbing gear that I grabbed off ebay for $40. I am not well versed on the rock climbing gear terms and tech but I think there is one that is much more complicated than mine and I have less straps or something like that. I know that some rock climbing gear you can barely more in and this one you a pretty free and it doesn't mess you up walking around.
Much more comfortable and smaller and actually stronger than the roofing one. I think Clyde or someone in here is a rock climber maybe they can tell us more?

here in calif it's mostly barrel and flat concrete tile, slipper when wet, we try to clean from the gutter and only go on the roof if it's really needed.
safety first...:)

The simpler, the better! Adding additional pieces of equipment to your safety rigging isn’t always the best idea. The more you add the more things there are to possibly fail. The simplest system for securing yourself to any object is a single piece of rope. Additional items such as a harness and carabineers have been introduced for convenience.
Carabineers:NEVER USE ANYTHING THAT ISN’T RATED FOR AT LEAST THREE TIME THE WORKING LOAD. Carabineers have become widely use for all kinds of things and can even be found at your local Wal-Mart. WARRNING – NOT ALL CARABINEERS ARE DESIGNED FOR SAFETY! Be aware of carabineers that are stamped “NOT FOR CLIMBING” or that do not have a safe working load stamped on them. Carabineers are made if different types of materials such as aluminum and steel. Most safety carabineers are going to be made of steel and will have a locking gate. (can not open unless opened) Locking gates generally have either a screw or twist type devise on the gate to keep it from being opened on accident.
Safety Harnesses:
I like a seat harness, easy on the back and comfortable, for residential work. There are commercial types and recreational types, the commercial type is easier to put on but most weigh a lot. The recreational ones that I’ve used are a bit more difficult to get on but seem to fit better and are lighter.
Take care of your gear! Store it away from all chemicals, do not walk on it, and do not drag it around if you can help it. Dirt that gets ground into it and will weaken it. It should have its own bag or tote. Once any piece of it shows signs of excess wear or abuse retire it from your safety system and buy a new one.
If you’re roping over the roof, be sure to protect the shingle at the peak where your rope is.

Ya it wouldn't be good if you tied of to the truck and the ground guy trys to sneak of to the store. It would be like that movie national lampoons vacation were they tie the dog to the bumper and forgot.

I prefer to stay off of a roof unless its just an easy low pitched one story. It would be nice if it always worked out that way. I definately wouldnt mind learning about wearing a harness for the times its neseccary.
